A friend sent me this email
"hey i'm droppin you a line since you know more about this kinda stuff
than i do
i'm not sure if I should get the Sony Vaio K45 or the FS550...the k45
has a p4, and the FS550 only has a centrino...i'm just looking towards
the future if i want to do (video) editing on it (film school) and i
know i'm gonna need a
decent processor...also the K45 is def cheaper...but i guess the
battery sucks and i dont know if you can get a better one or not...i
dunno, if you have any free time let me know what you find out"
Also... is this the best laptop within the price range? She needs a
"more portable desktop replacement" that she won't "be taking it
everywhere", so she doesn't worry much about battery life, size, weight
etc. But she's says she definitely wants a sony vaio laptop, without a
doubt. The reason I say this is that I had a bad experience with sony
vaio laptops, buying one in early 2001 that stopped working right after
the warranty expired, which I replaced in early 2002 which stopped
working in 2004, eventhough both rarely left the house, though given
that they were the prettiest and most comfortable to use (keyboard) I
totally understand her insistence. The reason I say this is because she
is graduating this year with a huge debt and moving to NYC where living
expenses will be high, so she won't have much money, and replacing or
fixing a laptop after its warranty expires will be a very unwelcome
cost. So, was my bad experience with sony vaios unique (from what i
read long ago it wasn't, but i wonder if others think otherwise, or if
reliability has improved since 2002 moderls)? also, by the sound of it,
despite warning her, her mind seems fixed on sony, so, is an extended
warranty worth it? is insurance a better option than an extended
warranty?
thanks |

I don't think she *knows* that the product has problems... like I said,
I had bad experiences with sony, having been a sony junkie between 2000
and 2004 (vaios, clio, cybershot, minidisc, etc etc) that in 2004 I
knew that I would forever avoid buying anything sony, or unless I hear
things have changed significantly. She thinks i'm "bitching" or being
an "asshole", which I somewhat understand given how attractive sony
products are and she's not had my experience, but worries me a little
nonetheless because it will be a non-trivial expense for her and a
computer is an essential item these days. |

your friend is not wise. sony is bad news for computers.
general advice regarding products made by different companies: go to the
company known for the particular product/industry... ie: get digital
cameras from CAMERA companies (nikon, canon, olympus etc), not from
sony/toshiba/panisonic/dell... same goes with computers. get a company
that is known for making DECENT COMPUTERS, not for making good televisions
and overpriced stereos. |

Hey I own the following laptops:
Epson PX-8 (runs CP/M 2.2 believe it or not) '84
Sharp PC4501 (runs MSDOS v6.2) '88
Toshiba T1950CS '94
2 Toshiba 2595XDVD '99
That Toshiba T1950 hasn't fired up in a couple of years now. Although
the rest of them still work fine. And I am really happy with the other
two Toshibas. As they are pushing 6 years old now and still are going
strong. One of them, the DVD drive quit reading DVDs, but reads CDs with
no problem.
So I don't know if I would knock Toshiba or not. As some models just
seem to keep on going forever. Although on the other hand (OTOH), some
models are pretty worthless.
Say, does Epson and Sharp even make laptops anymore?
Cheers!

1) The laptop with the fastest CPU in it will be better for video
editing aside from having a large HD in it to hold the video.
Ignore/forget/don't buy celeron units - far too slow.

Re: please help choose a sony vaio laptop within budget for |

I looked at the Sonys. They didn't come close to the price/performance of
others. You're paying for the name and you're stuck with proprietary
technology like "Memory Stick."
Consider an HP Pavilion or a Dell. Their multicard readers do not only
memory stick but dozens of other formats. (SD/MMC, SM/xD etc)
I don't know what your budget is but I found a floor model Pavilion zd7260
for about $1,800US.
17" SXGA+ (1680x1050 - GREAT for video editing), nVideo GeForce FxGO5700
64MB GPU, 3.2 GHz P4HT (Northwood, 512KB cache, 800MHz FSB), 80GB hard drive
(upgraded to a faster one), 512MB RAM (upgraded to 1024MB) - DVD burner,
S-video out, Firewire, 802.11g, multi-card reader etc...
In short, it's a screamer and my primary workstation.
One compromise you make with a full P4HT versus a Pentium 4 Mobile is
battery life. 1 to 2 hours TOPS.
Indirectly, this also means a hotter, noisier machine - the fans on this
thing are huge and when you're rendering something they WHINE. (similar
noise footprint to having a floor standing fan on "low" across the room...)
At the time, it was the best machine I could get my hands on. Dell now makes
some nice mobile workstations. HP has upgraded their line too.
If I had the option of putting the mobile processer in, I probably would as
I hear it consumes about a 5th of the power and is almost exactly as fast as
the P4HT. (more efficient architecture, hence lower heat and comparable
throughput)
My 2 cents.

*sigh*
Dear netizens, I think i just had yet another encounter with the
infamous "chick logic".
Some of its features in this case are...
1) in an instance of "chick logic", tell a girl an honest, genuinely
caring but disinterested, evidence and fact-based, tactfully but
clearly phrased opinion and you'll be sure that she'll rush to do its
diametrically-opposed nemesis with the utmost urgency.
2) in an instance of "chick logic", no good deed goes unpunished.
So, whereas so far she had told me that she may or may not buy a laptop
and she had been thinking about it as a possibility for the future, now
she just told me she'll buy it tonight!
That's feature (1) of "chick logic", feature (2) is that she told me
I'm being an "asshole" and abruptly ended our conversation on instant
messaging.
This reminds me of countless experiences with female friends,
girlfriends, and an ex-wife. I have particularly observed it in girls
who have no brothers, especially when they are the firstborn, and I
wonder if it's an electra complex issue (female version of oedipus
complex).
Basically, tell a girl that someone or something is bad for her in a
manner such as I described above, and she'll go running for it. Tell
her that a guy is bad for her, and whereas so far she had been
uncertain about him or not really interested, now you're certain that
next time she sees him (tomorrow!) he'll have sex with her, and somehow
she'll let you know that he did, at which point you, if you're like me,
decide to shut up about it and leave her to her mistakes, because you
by then know from past encounter with "chick logic" that if you say
what you really think it'll compel her to unreasonably stick to him no
matter what, and soon enough, having shut up, she'll start telling you
how abusive he is to her, which you decide to not say a word about too,
and soon enough, perhaps a few weeks later, she'll say she quit him and
how bad he was to her, though her assessment that you were an "asshole"
in warning her remains unchanged, eventhough you certainly were as
careful and considerate in how you phrased your advice, in fact, the
more tactful you are the more suspicious and subborn she becomes.
I'm not being sexist, and I'm not a sexist guy, far from it. Not to get
autobiographical, but my maternal grandparents died in WWII when she
was 6, and I think this has affected her in that when she was my parent
she was absent emotionally, that though she was a good domestic carer I
don't remember a single instance of intimacy from her in my childhood,
that I may as well say that I was considerably more mothered by my
eldest sister than my mother, so I have always had a temptation to see
oppose patriarchy and I were to choose a mode of governing either in a
family or a society my first impulse would probably be a matriarchy,
perhaps due to an underlying need for mothering. But(!), I have learned
that that's NOT how girls work. As feminist as I may wish to be, the
majority of girls seem to be anti-feminist on many issues, one of them
is "chick logic", which really is something that's hard for any guy or
for Agent Reason per se, had there been such an entity, to understand.
I don't think it's sexist to say that there is such a thing as "chick
logic", that not only that guys tend to be rational and girl emotional,
but that sometimes the rational suggestion compels girls to act
contra-rationally and with intense emotionality, and that I really
can't imagine any guy reacting as I've described in the the examples
above.

The advantage of Centrino is in power consumption.
A fast Pentium 4 for video editing will run perhaps an hour on batteries.
But regardless of the processor, editing while running on batteries is not
practical.
Centrino = best general purpose choice for laptop.
Pentium 4 = best (current) choice for video editing. |
