friday night I was on my laptop and I saw a spider..and me being
scared to death of them jumped up and when I did I knocked my glass
over which spilled all over my laptop. I dried it as best I could and
left it there for 24 hours like I was told to. finally the time comes
for me to test it out so I do..I turn on the computer and it turns on
but the screen still remains black. So we go to best buy from where we
got it, and they say they can't fix it due to the way the incident
happen, which I think is BS because it was so freaking accidental.
*careless, yet accidental* I've read in a lot of places that I can
just get a new motherboard, and for cheap if I order it from the
internet. Is that a good idea? Beacuse my Dad is VERRRY pissed, and I
just got this comp as a graduation gift...and no way in hell is he
ever gonna get me a new one. I think my best bet is to order a brand
new motherboard...but im not totally sure if this is the right thing
to do, and what sites would be at the best price. Anyone got any
suggestions? It'd be greatly appreciated.

Do you remove the battery after this accident??

You have learned a hard lesson. Do not have liquids in close proximity of
electronic devices. Unless you purchased coverage for "accidents" which
cause damage to the laptop, you are SOL. The motherboard may not be the
problem at all. You could have simply broken the connection to the screen.
There could be numerous things wrong with your laptop and you should have it
checked out by a reputable repair shop. The fact that your father is VERRRY
pissed is totally understandable.

Also, perhaps your homeowners' (uh, your father's) insurance may cover this
(but only if he has a computer rider, I believe)? It was an "accident"
after all.

Just out of curiosity, what type of liquid was spilled?

Normal warranty coverage will not cover this, not even extended
warranties. There are "no fault" extended warranties that include
accidental coverage, Dell and Toshiba offer them, so do some others, for
a premium of course but not that bad (typically $200 to $350 for total
coverage for 2 to 4 years).

What was the liquid that spilled?

There's still a chance it may come back .... sometimes things need 3-7
days to dry out.

A new motherboard, like a new LCD screen, is a truly major repair,
usually not economically feasible from the manufacturer. Figure $300 or
to $600 just for the part. And the motherboard may not fix your
problems, you could have gotten the keyboard, the optical (CD/DVD)
drive, the hard drive and other boards inside the laptop, plus things
like the fan, the cables connecting the lid to the base, etc.

Don't know what to recommend. Your best bet might be to sell it "as-is"
on E-Bay.

[If this is a new laptop, you won't find or get a "cheap" motherboard.
You can find motherboards on E-Bay for OLDER models, but they may or may
not be cheap, and they may or may not work.]

If you are a student, next time consider an extended warranty with
accidental damage protection. With a laptop, drops, spills and cracked
screens are major issues and can cost more than a new laptop to repair.
Also, as a general rule (for desktops as well as laptops), keep your
drinks away from your computers.

Water spilled. I didn't take out the battery right away..I was too
busy being worried as hell and rushing to clean up the water on it.

Here's the thing though. The place that we went to today to ask if
it's covered for spills is not the location that we bought it from.
Everyone I asked is saying for me to go to the actual location and
tell a little white lie that I turned on my comp and the screen went
black. Would the people there buy that? I REALLLLY need this comp,
I'm a college student and am going into Web Design. My Dad is not
going to buy me a new one, and I really don't know what to do. :(

Is the unit insured through your homeowners or renters insurance policy?

Also, since it is a new computer, your dad may have purchased an EXTENDED
warranty for it. That **might** cover the water damage. Why don't you
check on that. Of course, if it is covered, the manufacturer will likely
just try to repair the unit first, rather than replace it.

Before you "go telling tales out of school," check on that first.

Good luck!

If it's just water, first, if you wait longer, it may well work again.
Don't give up until you have waited at least a week.

Second, once the water evaporates COMPLETELY (could take a week or more)
it may not be possible to determine that there was a spill.

Wal-Mart is going to have a laptop for $399 on the Friday after
Thanksgiving. Both OfficeMax and OfficeDepot have desktop computers
this week for $299 including monitor (at OfficeMax, it's an LCD
monitor). You can build a low-end desktop computer for under $200.

It could take a month or more for water inside the case to evaporate. It
needs to be disassembled most of the way and dried out completely. Anything
other than pure water would need all the components washed thoroughly then
dried before power on....

While I agree with your prices for Wal-Mart, OfficeMax and Office Depot, it
would be pretty tough to put together any desktop for under $200. The OS
alone is going to cost close to $100 and that only leaves $100 for a case,
motherboard, cpu, memory, keyboard, monitor and mouse. I'm curious as to
how that could be accomplished.

Uh - say $40 for a cpu, $25 for a mobo, $20 for a power supply, $30
for RAM, that leaves $85 for a disk and case. And the o/s is free.

Keyboard and mouse you can chip in $5-10 for yourself. Monitor ..
well, that's up to you I guess. And that's without a wholesaler's
weight to sling around.

I'm all for putting pc's together and everyone I have is homebuilt but you
leaving out the Monitor and claiming to get the OS for free isn't my idea of
putting together a system for under $200. Seems to me that it's pretty
tough to beat those $299 deals from the Wal-Marts, Office Depot, Best Buy,
etc and one couldn't even come close to putting something together for $300.
Almost all include speakers and a printer of some sorts.

Why not? The o/s has always been free. I've always used ones that cost
nothing or at most the cost of the medium (if the net, then nothing).
As to the monitor - I simply don't buy monitors, so I don't know about
them. Which reminds me, I forgot the cost of a video card and a
network card. Say $25 for both?

Quote:

It is. But then they don't pay retail - the profit that you pay on
every item if you buy parts yourself instead is totted up on the
package as a whole when you buy it from them.

The 64 bit system I am putting together has so far cost me $80 for the
amd 64 3000, $40 for the GA mobo, and $15 for the water-cooler. Next
I'll get a power supply and some ram. I have old cases and disks to the
gunnels. Ditto network cards. So I reckon $200 will have done it.
