Overclocking - Memory Clock speeds for 2D 3D locked? |
|
|
Finally put my ATI 9700 non-pro to rest today.....
..... and installed a GF6600GT from MSI. First I reflashed the BIOS to
enable the core temperature monitor - worked great. Then I ran NVTweak
(previously called CoolBits), and enabled a bunch of the hidden registry
stuff, including overclocking.
Under "Clock Frequency Settings", I attempted to underclock both the GPU
and the memory for 2D applications, and slightly overclock the
GPU/Memory for 3D apps. While that works fine for the GPU clock
frequency, the memory frequency for 2D and 3D seems to be locked
together. That is, you cannot have different clock speeds for 2D and 3D
apps. Why?! Or, is something wrong with my rig?
Is there another overclocking utility that would allow me to set the two
clock speeds independently, and the AA and AF settings, automatically
based on the application that is running?
Thanks! |

At least with the built-in overclocking utility, yes, the memory clock
rates are the same between 2D and 3D. I don't think there's much benefit
in setting a lower memory clock in 2D - the heat production doesn't seem
much greater at higher speeds, most of the limitation of memory
overclocking is inherent to the chip and not related to temperature, etc.

OK. I guess the better question is: can anyone tell me of a good
overclocking utility that automatically adjusts settings (clock rates,
AA, AF, video quality) based on the 3D application that is running?
The built-in utility allows for auto-setting AA/AF/etc, but not the
clock speeds. |

This kind of utility only makes sense if you card is already clocked on the
knife edge, where it would show artifacts in one game and not the other.
What's wrong with a single overclock setting that's robust for all games?

That's just the way it is with the Nvidia BIOS. 2D and 3D speeds will
always be the same. |
