ThinkPad 600E BIOS flashing needs charged battery => ;-( |
|
|
Hi
I'd like to flash the BIOS of my IBM ThinkPad 600E. This is necessary
to install Win2000 or XP.
The flashing program asks for a charged battery, but mine is like dead
and I don't really want to buy a new one just for a 2-minute use for
the flashing process (I know I'll never use the thing on battery).
Is there any manner to circumvent this, i.e. to flash it w/o a new,
charged battery, just on the mains? I tried to simulate the battery
with a 10.8V power supply, etc...no result yet.
Any trick or idea for this? Thanks a lot in advance!

I do not know about that but if you find a way, make sure your machine |
is connected to a working UPS before attempting the flash. However
remote the chances of loosing power, remember you would get a new door
step ...

Hi,
Check this message; 43653F1F.3080609@neo.rr.com
It covers an earlier TP but may work on yours as well.
Try to imagine how much you would regret it if your
attempt to flash Bios backfires!
Pick the right time of day when power is particularly
stable and when no kids or klutzes are around that
just may stumble over your power cable.
And double check so that you have the right files,
and no typos on your floppy.

I'd try listing the text in the bios update file.
One laptop needed the option /FORCEIT to flash without
the battery. Don't remember which laptop it was,
but wasn't a thinkpad.

I've read that some have hacked the BIOS update disk to allow the BIOS
update without a battery. I'll leave the searching to you. (Unless
you're fortunate and someone replies with the procedure). |

I have the same laptop and installed Win2k without flashing bios. I haven't
had any problems.

That is Dell. Does not work on TP's.

I had the same issue with a Thinkpad 700E just on Sunday, and posted
about it here. I also posted the solution, but better explanations can
be found on the web.

Hi Brigitte
I presume your 600E has a more recent BIOS than mine. Which one do you
have?
cheers & thanks,

This is working instructions to upgrade bios without battery
*** This is NOT a safe way to update the bios (disclaimer) ***
* First you need to make a BIOS update floppy disk (from the bios file
from IBM - place disk in a: drive, run app and answer Y to the
agreement) and then format another disk by right clicking on A: -
format - make system bootdisk (assuming you have another machine spare)
* Copy all the files from the IBM Boot disk - in my case
$0029000.fl1
$0029000.fl2
FLASH2.EXE
PROD.DAT
UPDTFLSH.EXE
updtrom.exe
USERINT.EXE
UTILINFO.EXE
to the other clean bootdisk.
* Ensure that there is no config.sys and autoexec.bat so it just runs
straight into DOS.
* Place the disk into the Laptop, reboot and allow the machine to load
via the floppy
* At the command prompt, type "FLASH2.EXE /U" with no quotes then press
enter.
The program will automatically search for the files *.FL1 & *.FL2 and
load the bios first then the platform file.
The program will automatically update and perform erasing on the rom
and then finish with "Update complete".
* Now reboot.
* Hold F1 down as you turn the laptop back on and go into Easy Setup
under "Config" click on Initialize to ensure defaults and settings are
error free.
* Save and exit... |
