hi,

i'm looking for some advice,

a friend of mine recently gave me this print server as his work was
throwing it out.what he sadly couldnt tell me is how you use the thing or
where to get any software it needs.
i have a small home network of 3 machines all presently running xp pro - i
have various printers knocking around but none currently installed on any
machines ( i get a lot of old equipment donated by friends who are
ugrading).

if it turns out to be beyond my abilities to use as a print server is there
any way to repurpose the kit to do something else?. was wondering if it was
possible to flash the firmware or whatever with linux to turn it into a
nas.
assuming theres anything in it to flash of course.

a bit ambitious i know but i found a group once who did that sort of thing -
of course i can no longer find it ;-P

I would guess its probably a Fiery made by EFI (www.efi.com you should
be able to find drivers there). The chances are that if you take the
cover off you will see it looks rather like a computer inside, with
motherboard, hard-disk, ram etc. Does it have a built in display? If
so can you navigate through a menu system on there to find out what
machines it drives.

These tend to be used to drive big copiers/printers, rather than to
network several. eg: mine turns my A3 colour copier into a printer.

Having had a quick look at EFI's website, are you sure it isn't a 5000
as opposed to a 500? If so there are various drivers there that you can
download (after free registration) and that should give you a clue as to
what it can do.

Once you download and install the drivers it should list machines that
it will drive, which are probably wide-format machines or plotters.
