I have just unpacked a DDS-4 tape drive, boxed as Certance but actually a
Seagate2401LW. Problem is it appears to be completely dead! Not a good
start we have been using HP drives for years and I have never seen a dead
one, this is the first Seagate drive we have ever tried and it is dead
straight out of the box. Question is are these Seagate drives that flakey
or are we just very unlucky. Has anyone else had a problem with one of
these?

I've had a Seagate DDS drive, although I think it's the next size up
(DDS-8 ??), for some years and haven't had any problems with it.

It was, however, sold as a Seagate.

Seagate's tape products now go by the name "Certance," but the last
Seagate tape drive I ever used was one developed by MB

Seagate's tape products now go by the name "Certance," but the last
Seagate tape drive I ever used was a DDS-2 autoloader developed by
Archive, which was taken over by Conner, which was taken over by Seagate.

All the hard disks in this machine are Seagate SCSI, which have been
trouble free for as long as seven years.

Seagate's tape products now go by the name "Certance." Next up from
DDS-4 (AFAIK) is DAT72, otherwise known as DDS-5 (36GB uncompressed).

Not entirely true, DAT72 products are not known as DDS-5. Reason is that
Sony holds the rights to the DDS name and they no longer consider DDS a
viable product line. I guess it's too much in they way of their low-end AIT
offerings. Sony refuses to allow HP/Certance to use the DDS name.

I'm sure I had seen it referred to somewhere as DDS-5, but that must
have been a mistake too.
