How Pci-X affects 15k u320 drives real time performance? |
|
|
Hi,
I was thinking of getting a mobo (tyan s2885 to be exact) with pci-x
to use with my 15k u320 hard drives. I know the fact that I used to
use my pci-x scsI controller in a pcI slot was a "limiting" factor,
but in reality if I was to put that card in a pci-x slot how much of a
performance gain would I see?
thanks for the help,

Not limiting at all unless you have several 15K RPM HDs doing bigfile or
streaming I/O.

Describe the HD setup and controller exactly and how it is to be used. |

Two HDs. There'll be no difference.

The k8w (with or with out pci-x slots) is a expensive board, how many
drives would i need to make the investment in the one with the pci-x
worthwhile? (i'd rather pay 200 dollars now instead of 400 later)

It is debatable, whether you need or not to invest to MB with PCI-X. The
following is rough generalization, which tries to answer your question: Given
that with two channel HBA you would need roughly 8-10 current generation SCSI
drives with 60-80 MB/s STRs spread evenly to both channels to hit the
Ultra 320 limit per channel(4x80 MB/s or 5x60MB/s ~ 300-320 MB/s per channel,
excluding command and protocol overhead), the maximum output of your HBA is
640MB/s minus overhead. This is the scenario, where you start to need
64-bit/100 MHz PCI-X connection, less drives per channel you can cope with
64-bit/66 MHz PCI/PCI-X bus. You may want to consider purchasing PCI-X-based
board from other viewpoints, though. Do you need dual Opteron -based MB?
Do you plan to use other high-bandwith cards in your setup? 32-bit/33 MHZ PCI bus might suffice now for combined troughput of your current drives, but are
you planning to purchase more? If yes, then you might need faster bus, and
purchase of PCI-X-equipped MB is justifiable.

Thanks for the help. As to answer your other questions, I picked the
k8w line because it was the only dual opteron with agp and pci-x. I
picked opterons in general because unlike some other processors
(mainly the p4) every update to the cpu requires a new mb also (and
its gotten to the point sometimes this is true even of an update as
minor as 200 or 300 mhz). Furthermore the k8w is very scaleable, I can
invest a little now and then slowly more and more, without having to
take anything old out (for example, if I put in one cpu now I can get
another one later and since it has 8 ram slots I can fill one or two
now and the rest later, without taking out the first two) and this is
a big up because being that I'm only a teen I only get $$$ in
relatively slow increments.

Don't ask why i am building a system like this, its a long story.

Probably similar to mine. You may want to check out http://www.2cpu.com/,
they have excellent forums for discussing different aspects of systems like
you are building. Good luck with your workstation.
