Beyond the Ti 4600 |
|
|
I was hoping to get some advice on the which video card to upgrade to.
Presently I have a Ti 4200 oc'd almost to 4600 level running with a Athlon
xp 2.8
I'd like to pay less than $600 Australian (hopefully quite a bit less) but
I'm finding it pretty confusing trying to work out what sort of card will be
sufficient. I'm hoping to be able to play the most graphically intense games
at their highest settings @ 1024x768 without any chugging, but would be
happy enough to do that @ 800x600. Do I have any hope of that for less than
$600au with
my cpu?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

....and for a helpful answer: I've just ebayed two Nvidia 6800 OC's for $430
each or so - very cheap for an excellent card. I have yet to see it chug at
all in Halflife2, farCry or so with max settings. Doom3 runs perfect on the
setting below Ultra with 4xaa & 8xaf. I'm very happy with them.

$430 each for a 6800 OC? Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a 6800 OC retail for $300?

Yeah fair enough, its just that my Isp's news server has recently crashed
and only has posts from a few days back. What I could find in the newsgroup
didn't specifically give me a good comparison between the Geforce 4 Ti's
and the newer cards.
In the end I did find a comparison on Toms Hardware and the sweetspot to me
looked like the 6800 - dramatically better fps over the Ti's and not in the
second hand car price range.

I just located a guy here locally that can get me a retail eVGA 6800
Ultra for $540 cash. With only a 2 to 3 day wait. Trucks down from
Dallas. I know the card should retail for $499.99....but....try getting
one without getting on a waiting list.

It's a sad state of affairs when one has to deal with the video card black
market. "Pssst... hey buddie. I can get you what ever you want. Crack,
Smack, or how about a deal on a 6800 Ultra."
The marketing departments of both Nvidia and ATI need to be fired.

For 600AUD, you can get almost any card but the 256MB 6800GTs and above.
@ the 300-350 price range you can get a 128MB 5900XT class card that
still does well except for AA/AF.
@ the 350-400 price range you can get the 128MB 6600GTs (though hard to
find) that will handle AA/AF at the lower resolutions, but is quite fast
if you disable AA/AF.
@ the 450-500 price range you can start looking at the 128MB 6800NU
models, clocked slower than the 6600GTs but with twice the bandwidth,
using older DDR vs DDR3 memory. Better for playing with AA/AF if you
want to stick with Nvidia.
@ the 500-600 range you can find 128MB 6800GTs using the older DDR
technology. The only real difference this and the 6800NU is a higher
clock speed.
If you can stretch your budget a little more to the 700AUD range, you
could start looking at the 256MB 6800GT, clocked much closer to ultra
speeds, 4 more pipelines than the 128MB models, and using DDR3 memory.
If you are looking to upgrade in the near future, and since you already
have AGP (because of your 4200ti) you should look at spending a bit back
and finding the 6600GTs. Then when you are ready to buy a new system,
look at the 6800GTs in PCIe.

Consider yourself corrected ;) We're talking AUD$ here. So prolly $190US or
so to you. Very cool cards, unlockable (extra 4 pipes), which is nothing to
