We have a backup PC that's pretty old but we use as a backup to get email
and do a bit of surfing if need be.

It's a Micron PIII 600 with 384 MB ram, win 98, SB audigy card and two small
drives. There's nothing wrong with the system that a video card replacement
wouldn't help. The PC has a Diamond Viper 770 card and Diamond Monster 3D
accelerator. They have been out of business for many years and there have
been no video driver updates for a long time. I do believe the mobo is a
440BX.

We would like to replace the video card with something inexpensive from the
Nvidia line-something that we could periodically update drivers. Bear in
mind we don't use this PC for much else other than as stated above. I know
it's ready for the junk heap and all that and it won't run Doom3 or FarCry,
just a card that would serve our purposes. Thanks.

I'm running some old systems with BX440 chipsets. They're all ABit
mobos actually. BH6, BH6 1.2, BE6-IIv2, BF6. Three of these can use
the Coppermine CPU's and I have 2, a P3-550E and P3-800. The BF6 is
using a Diamond Viper V770U (TnT2Ultra), and a P3-450, 768 megs, 98SE
and plays Q3A fairly well. The BE6-IIv2 is running the P3-800, 768 megs
SDram, and a new Radeon 7000-64 and is AGP 2X.
I have a GF4-Ti4600 that is AGP 2X4X and may try that one in the P3-800.
You should be able to find a DX8 capable card for well under $100 that
*should* work in that motherboard.

BTW, I call my 'backup' The Junkbox', cause I just throw stuff in it to
see if it still works :)

I don't understand what your goal is, other than to be able to update
drivers. The card you have would seem to be adequate for what you do with
the machine. What I don't understand is why do you have a TNT2 card and an
older Monster? The Monster was a dinosaur when the 770 came out. You are
actually slowing things down by using the Monster so ditch that. I think
the TNT2 card is great for what you do with the machine but if you really
want to spend money then buy something like an MX400/4000/440/420.

All these are slow cards by today's standards but will smoke the V770 you
have now, especially the crippling Monster card.

Find a cheap used Geforce 3 on ebay. They go for about $30.

The Viper V770 uses the nVidia TNT2 chipset, which means it can use the
latest nVidia unified ForceWare drivers, still updated regularly:

Unless you use the machine to play old Glide games, you can ditch the
Monster3D card outright.
