Upgrade advice |
|
|
I am looking to spend 150$ to upgrade my Gf4 ti4600. I want to get Dx9
compatibility, and to stay at 128MB of video ram (256 would be nice, but
that leaves me with the LE models, and i am not sure how much of an upgrade
that is)
Any ideas?
1.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
ASUSTeK P4T533-C REV 1.xx
640 RDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600 |

Your best bet is waiting for the price to come down on the 6600GT AGP version.
If you can't wait you should be able to pick up an OEM 9800Pro for $150, but
the 6600GT is faster and has the newest versions of Direct9 features. |

When I posted $150 I was talking about Ebay. If your lucky you might be able to
get one there for $150. The OEM is gonna run around $185 new from online
websites.
My advice is wait it out a bit for the price of the 6600GT AGP version to drop.
I'm in the same boat as you I'm still using a 4200, but it runs everything fine
just not at high resolutions. I have used it for H2, Doom3, etc. I want the
best bang for the buck, and I think if you wait a bit longer you will get a
better deal then buying something now on impulse. |

I have a 9800 Pro less than 6 months old, not OEM that I am interested in
selling.

With that CPU the 9800Pro is probably as high as he should go as the extra
performance will not be seen.

The only new card in your price range worth upgrading to would be a Radeon
9600XT which are running about $140. It would give you the DX9 but only a
marginal increase in speed.

He can use it in the future on another motherboard. I wouldn't buy a graphic
card going by only CPU speed, just because it might be limited somewhat. It
doesn't mean you should get the least expensive upgrade. The price difference
between them is not really all that much, so it makes more sense to get a lot
more speed with a little extra money even if you can't use it all right now . |

I know someone with a 9600XT, we have the around same CPU, and memory setup. My
4200 gets around 13500 points 3Dmark2001, his 9600XT gets around 11500. My 4200
gets around 2000 points in 3DMark 2003, his 9600XT gets around 3000.
Not worth it especially if he is using a 4600 IMO. |

How does a ti4200 get 13500 in 3dmark01? Besides that, the 3dmark03 is a
more relevant benchmark for todays gaming.

Agree 100% but if you look at the OP it seemed to me that he was short of
cash. |
