I have a P4 3.0 GHz with a gig of RAM. I am running an ATI 9800 Pro and
would like to upgrade to a GeForce 6800, is this worth it? Will I notice
that much of a difference? I mostly play Half Life and Doom3 with Far Cry
under the tree.

Thanks

You should see around 50-60% inprovement in 3D games, if you can find the
extra cash the GT would be a better choice.

With these games you'll certainly find a nice increase in fps. I'd also
say a 6800GT would be the best choice.

I suppose that all depends on where you live and where you plan to get
it, but pricewatch tells me that in the US, the 6800GT go for 370-390,
so - provided you live in the US - you should be fine.

I live in the US, I saw the BEG at Best Buy for $399 and am pretty sure it
is the GT, I may go for that one, I am not sure.

Thanks
John

Just to give you an idea, I run a 2.8Gig P4 @3.080 with a Gig of RAM and a
Leadtek 6800NU at 380/840 and run around 57fps for Doom3 at high settings.
You will get better by maybe 20-40% with a GT depending on settings.

If you want to play all those games then go for the GT you will be so glad
in the long run. If you really can't afford it then the NU is pretty good
but chokes on higher AA settings, you can get around that like I do by
simply running at 1600x1200, AA really does not matter then because that
resolution looks so good and I find that at 1600x1200 it still runs at over
50fps and you have to be happy with that.

I actually stepped up from a 9800Pro, it died after 3 weeks and the shop did
not have a replacement card so I paid a little more and got the 6800, I am
very happy I did.

Cheers.
