Replace old Geforce2 MX 400 with new Radeon 9200SE? |
|
|
Hi
I know you are unlikely to be impressed by the choice, but I'm wondering
whether to replace a 32MB Geforce2 MX 400 legacy card with a brand new
128MB 9200SE that just fell my way.
It seems that the extra memory may be useful on a 4 yr old P3 1000 Mhz
system with 768 MB ram. Any thoughts?

You'll notice quite a difference in almost everything. But OpenGL
support will be a bit worse. It'll be fine for legacy stuff like
Counterstrike, but surprisingly OK with Doom 3 (low settings however).
ATI cards seem to help low end systems out more in Direct3D apps though
than an equivalent NVIDIA card.
When you do get around to upgrading, a cheap NForce 2 based board with
an XP2500 to 3200 and RAM will only run about 250.00 USD or less at
Newegg. You'll definitely want a better overall system before going any
further with video card upgrades. |

Some Geforce2's and 3's had kind of fuzzy 2d at higher resolutions. Then,
too, I've heard of less than typically sharp ATI 2d on cards not
manufactured by ATI itself.
On the latest generation of nvidias there still can be some variation at
high resolutions.
