Just a quick (Dumb?) question.
Currently running an Nvidia FX 5700 Ultra that is overclocked using
coolbits.(GPU clock at 520 Mhz, Memory at 990 Mhz)
I have just aquired an Nvidia FX 5900 XT that I would like to test out in my
machine to see how much of a diference it makes.
Can I just swap the card over without uninstalling any thing, or have I got
to change any settings first.
Thanks
Helinut

Yes, absolutely. I've done it several times now. Each time you install
the new device, your old registry settings can get cleared, so you might
have to redo coolbits. Just make sure you select uninstall for your
current 5700 in device manager before putting in the new one.

You're probably okay with just a swap. You shouldn't have a driver problem.

wrong guy, add/remove the nvidia display driver in the control panel. Even
for something as mundane as updating drivers. Do it right first or suffer
from your own mistakes.

I've updated and backdated drivers a zillion times with no problems. I

just installed them right on top of the old ones. If somebody isn't real
comfortable with deleting or uninstalling stuff, I'd for sure have him
try the overlap method first, especially with nvidia cards. Changing
brands is another story, but I've read a ton of horror stories in here
about people deleting things they shouldn't because they think they need
to remove all traces of a previous install. You don't. If the driver up
date or card swap works, just run a reg cleaner and it should be okay.
Never failed me yet doing it that way and it's a lot easier.

I concur. I can remember that with an old Matrox card I had it always told
me it was obligatory to remove current drivers before installing new ones.
But with my currenty nVidia card this never has been the case, and I never
encountered _any_ problem installing new drivers on top of the old ones.

I've NEVER removed old drivers when updating the card to a new version of the
same family of cards and its never given me a problem. I've even recently not
bothered to remove the Cat's when I pulled a 9800 and installed a 6800....

The cat's drivers or the cats?

Meowing minds want to know.

Thanks so far.
Just to clarify, I am not planning changing the graphics driver as I all
ready have the latest one.
(I also just tend to install over the top when updating drivers)
I was more concerned about the overclock settings, and any effects they may
have on the new card. However I will reset the clock speeds to default
before swapping cards so hopefully no problems. Will know tomorrow when the
card arrives

Hey! They forgot the "close all running programs (etc.)" bit! :)

Nope. But it _is_ a Dutch "CeeBee" as well; curious coincidence.

Just to update (if anyones interested)
Reset the coolbits setting to no overclock, shut down PC, took out old
card, installed new card, booted up, it found new hardware, reset the
resolution and colours, re applied the coolbits registery hack and hey
presto, it all works.
Tested with 3DMark 03 and got an extra 1100 points, auto detected optimal
overclock settings (435, 790) and got another 500 points to top out at 5624.
Well pleased
