Sony admits their own graphics people SUCK ASS |

I never thought this would happen. Playstation 3 is getting basicly an
Nvidia-designed GPU. listen to today's Nvidia press conference /
invester chat Q&A
http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?p=irol-eventDetails&c=116466&eventID=987534
It still is not known what *Sony* is providing, if anything, for PS3's
GPU, as *now* PS3's GPU is confirmed to be a largely Nvidia-made GPU.
I thought it would be the other way around--I thought Sony would be
doing the PS3 GPU mostly in-house, with MAYBE some contributions from
Nvidia. NOW it appears to be almost completely the opposite. PS3 GPU is
based mostly or completely on Nvidia's next-generation PC desktop GPU
(whether that is NV50 or something else). PS3 GPU is a custom GPU, but
then, so was Xbox GPU. The Xbox's NV2A GPU was basicly a GPU inbetween
the GeForce3 and GeForce4 Ti, with some additional elements that did
not show up on the desktop until GeForceFX.
With Playstation3 having a mostly Nvidia-designed GPU, it means Sony is
admitting that its own graphics engineering team(s) suck ass, so badly,
that Sony is like: "ok we better go get Nvidia on-board". Otherwise,
Sony would've made PS3's GPU itself, like it did for PS2's Graphics
Synthesizer and PS1's 'GPU'.
kinda OT: If you recall (probably not) in 1996-1997, there were rumors
that Sony was going with a PowerVR 'Highlander' graphics chip for
Playstation2. (PowerVR Highlander was the codename for PowerVR2, a
version of which was used in Dreamcast). Also, one infamous poster
(Nobody's Perfect) even said that there was a version of PSX2 that had
Evans & Sutherland graphics processors, in case Sega went with
something better than PowerVR or 3Dfx in Dreamcast. whether that is
true or not, I have no idea. but what IS true today is that Sony has
admitted it needs help if Playstation 3 is going to display *quality*
realtime graphics. not just quantity. you see, PS1 and PS2 both
produced a great QUANTITY of graphics. i.e. lots of polygons. lots of
fillrate. but never *quality* graphics, compared to what Sega had
(Lockheed Martin in arcades, PowerVR in console & arcades) or what
Nintendo had (SGI, ArtX, ATI) or what Microsoft has (Nvidia, now ATI).
Now Sony might have it all. Nvidia has a MASSIVE wealth of graphics IP
and engineering talent. Nvidia has people from the very best graphics
companies. SGI. Evans & Sutherland. 3DLabs. even probably some former
Lockheed Martin Real3D people. (Nvidia listed Real3D on GeForceFX's
presentation slide for) Although ATI probably has more Real3D engineers
than Nvidia, I think, since ATI took over Real3D's design center in
Florida and bought up some Real3D IP and hired some of their engineers.
ok let me get back on-topic...
Sony no longer has to worry very much about its graphics in PS3. Sony
no longer has to worry about PS3 graphics compared to what Microsoft
(and Nintendo) have with ATI, thanks to all of ATI's engineering talent
& IP.
so even though my subject line makes it sound like I think Sony has
shitty graphics (they did) you see that, now, Sony is going to have
very outstanding graphics quality with Playstation 3, as well as maybe
PSP-2 and PS-4 in the more distant future. |

Stop cross-posting to the alt.comp. groups. No one gives a rat's ass,
especially since console development work takes people and resources from
making quality video cards.

so you're saying that Nvidia's work on PS3 will take away from their PC
video card chips and that Nividia will produce another GeForceFX ?

Jen-Hsun Huang talks Playstation3 |

Nvidia CEO on Playstation3
"The next generation game console will consist of 2 devices that Sony
has talked about. One of them is the Cell microprocessor....the second
device that will be a companion device to it is the graphics processor and
the graphics processor will also be the image processor and there's all
kinds of exciting features that will come out. It's based on the next
generation GPU technology and our expectation is to try and put it into
production this year. Our next generation GPU has been in development for
quite some time as you'd imagine and is something that's near completion."
"It is going to be a custom GPU, and its going to be a custom GPU to
architect it and optimize to work specifically with the Cell microprocessor.
Ultimately if you think about the architecture inside this GPU...it probably
was a......this next generation architecture took several hundred people
several years to go build, but this specific implementation of that
architecture should take about 50 engineers and is something we're running
full throttle on and I have every expectation that we will be able to see
final production silicon later on in the year."

Sony has always had crap graphics compared to their peers. The N64 made PSX
look like a lump of fart splatter. The GameCube makes the PS2 look like a
twig of poo.
Honestly, graphics, etc, has never been Sony's game systems strong point.
It's always been marketing and business dealings. Much like the NES versus
the Sega Master System. The NES didn't win on it's own merit, just like the
PSX and PS2 haven't won because they're better systems.
I'm hoping that this next round the top system in sales will also be the top
quality system. That's probably asking too much out of Sony to make a
quality as in craftsmanship product, since they are 100% inept and don't
care
because people buy them anyways, but at least this time hopefully the
graphics won't look like a three year old retard drawing on your screen with
a broken Spirograph.
I'm going to keep my fingers crossed! |

In the world of buisness you make decisions based on many different things.
Outsourcing doesn't mean Sony thinks "their own graphics people suck ass".
They could have conducted a cost benefit analysis and saw that by
outsourcing this they will be able to create aditional revune while having a
lower msrp. There are many reason and the one you stated is not nesessarily
correct. |
