Max.Drives on 200W Power Supply Unit |
|
|
Hi,
I have a Dell Dimension V450 with a 200W power supply.
I presently have 2 hard drives and 1 cd-rw connected to it. I would like to
know whether I can add another hard drive without changing the power supply.
I checked on the net and it seems it should work fine.
any help with this would be great.
Sincerely,
PvS |

1) It sounds like maybe you've already done this, but you can use a
power supply load calculator, like this one:
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
....to estimate your requirements. I would try more than one to see if
they agree.
2) The ratings for components represent a peak consumption. Although it
is unlikely that all of your components will simultaneously be at peak
consumption, it's a safe plan to assume that they are.
3) 200W is not very much for a system with a modern video card. Also,
if it is not a good quality PSU, you may not be able to consistently
load it to specification. |

Hard drives use a lot of power at boot time and not much while running
..Frankly,I'm surprised you haven't reached the limit of your 200W PS yet.

hi
i got the new drive. and it seems to be working fine.
i checked on dell's site. it seems that dell uses mean power rating and not
peak, so it seems that my setup should work properly.
thanks for all ur help
