6600GT or 6800 |
|
|
hey all,
I need some advice. Should I go for a Albatron 6600GT for $340, or an
Albatron 6800 for $500?? Not sure, as ive heard great things about the
6600GT keeping up with the big boys, while being relatively cheap... but is
it worth an extra 160 or so to go with the 6800?
Cheers |

I would go with the 6600gt vs 6800. If anything I would consider spending
the additional amount needed to buy a 6800gt or ultra before spending extra
for a 6800. |

'tis the same situation as always, the faster part costs a
lot more. We can't tell you how much it's worth to YOU,
only you can make that call.
If you have a high-end new system, the 6800 makes more sense
for a serious gamer. If your system isn't otherwise
top-notch/modern, it would be somewhat of a bottleneck
anyway so better to put the $ into the 6600GT or other
upgrades first, assuming system is also used for more than
just gaming. |

If I was going to upgrade a few things Id get PCI express and get the
6600. On the otherhand the PCI express baords have been selling for a
lot more here so there are probably way better deals coming up in the
not too distant future so thats a consideration too if you can wait.
If I was getting AGP boards then considering the huge gap in price Id
get the 6600 GT. Here there is also a huge gap but there have been a
few deals that narrow the gap. Like at newegg the 6600GT is around
170-180 while there were two sales after rebate at Compusa for the
6800 for $200.
If its close Id rather get the 6800 but if theres a huge price
difference or if I could get the PCI express of the 6600 GT for
cheaper or the same price I think id get if you can upgrade the MB
too. |

cheers guys, I think i will get the 6600GT, as the 6800GT, the only other
real choice, is way too expensive...
Ill also spend some money on another stick of 512 DDR 333 RAM too, cant hurt

Huh? how is the 6800GT the "only other real choice"?
You might be overlooking the other good choice, the base
6800NU (Non Ultra). It should have pretty good overclock
ability, perhaps really good depending on what memory is on
it, which might vary per manufacturer, I can't help there. |

Oh yeah I cant remember how long the 6600 GT card is but the 6800 I
bought is LONG. I read about it in one review but I didnt realize how
long it was until I installed it and tried to put my hard disk cage
back which is right in the other side. In fact its too long. I cant
fit my 3.5 cage back with the two HDs in the postions they are in. Id
have to drill new holes and space them far apart near the top and
bottom of the cage. I ended up just putting them where I usually put
my floppy 3.5 cage.
Obviously this may or may not be a problem depending on your case
structure. Ive got a full tower Antec so I think smaller cases have
less flexibilty since they dont have TWO 3.5 cage positions. However
Ive seen some smaller cases now where they have brackets running all
the way down to the floor of the case from the 5.25 cage so you might
have the flexibility you need to position the HDs even in smaller
cases. |

Re: 6600GT or 6800 |

even though there is the 6800, after looking through some online reviews and
pc mags, ive come to the conclusion that the 6600GT is almost as good as the
6800 straight. I mean almost, as in the fact that it may be 2-4 fps out,
whoopy... DEFINATELY not worth another 160 dollars.... therefore, the next
real contender is the 6800GT, as it offers a good performance increase...
however, its out of my price range, so the 6600GT should suit me fine... |

I seem to have momentarily forgotten that we're talking
about Australian dollars, for some reason I'd presumed the
regular 6800 you'd mentioned wasn't the base 6800 model,
rather some kind of Golden Sample 6800 GT or Ultra. Now I
realize my mistake, perhaps the confusion was why you'd
posted a query about the two cards if one was out of the
budget already? |

yeah, sorry about that, should have been clearer. I would have purchased the
6800 if it offered a large performance increase, and I wanted to see what
other's thoughts were on the situation. Its clear that the 6600GT offers
around the same sort of performance, while being substantiually cheaper,
nice in my books! I also posted this question to a few online forums, and
they all seem to agree that the 6600GT is a great card at the price, esp.
since it can keep up with the big boys.
Thats why I also suggested that the 6800GT is probably the only real next
consideration, but after seeing its price, I think i'll stick to the 6600GT
:)
Yeah, we are in Aussie dollars here, so u pretty much times everything by 2
(if you are converting from American dollars)

These are all pci-e, but quality may (or may not) carry over to the agp
protocol.
