Suggestions for a digital camera |
|
|
I recently bought a Canon SD300 Elph due to it's good ratings, but find it
isn't really suitable for my needs. I find that it doesn't have enough
optical zoom.
I'm looking for a new camera and was hoping someone could provide some
suggestions based on personal experience.
What I would prefer is 4-5 megapixel with a high optical zoom. I don't need
alot of manual settings, I prefer the automatic point and shoot variety.
Thank you

Pentax Optio SV is probably smaller than your Elf and 5x optical zoom. Just
released in November.

Have a look at the Kodak DX6490 - it's a 4 mega-pixel camera with a very
good quality lens providing a 10 x optical zoom. I've had one for about 9
months and am very happy with it.
Loads of reviews on the net, here's the one at "steves-digicams"
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/dx6490.html
A similar spec camera is the Minolta Dimage Z1 (and it's newer siblings)
Haven't used one myself, but have seen some good reviews.

There's no doubt that the elph was a mistake...I've got it on auto and the
pictures come out quite dark...I've had to edit them in Photoshop just to
improve the quality.
I don't think size is going to matter anymore....my analog camera was quite
large.

Just have a look at a DX6490 in a shop - it's not as large as it appears in
some of the pictures online.
I'm no expert, but I think you will find that you will often have to
compensate for under or overexposure in software when taking pictures in
auto. It depends on the light the subject etc and the auto modes can't
always get it excactly right.
Hope you find a camera that suits.

I guess it depends whether you want a camera in your pocket ready to use or
one on your dresser at home that will do everything if you had an extra
shoulder to carry the camera case.
You may be setting up the camera incorrectly or if the exposure is off it's
a factory tuneup job. Don't wait until the warranty expires.

I guess it just comes down to whether or not you need to have to be able to
carry your camera around in a pocket or if you don't mind carrying a bag.
Personally, I don't find a bag slung over my shoulder to be any hassle. And
remember, the original poster was looking for something with a high optical
zoom. Not sure of any pocket models that have a 10x optical zoom.

Anna,
The Kodak EasyShare has a 10x Zoom at 5 mega pixels and is listed sometimes
for $499.
Any camera with a high zoom should have an antishake feature. I don't know
if it does have anti shake.
Several years back, my second digital camera was a Sony Mavica 14x optical
zoom with antishake. I still have the camera but don't use it much unless I
need a long zoom for a small photo. It was great for small animal photos in
Africa, where it is hard to get close to some of the animals, and for
zooming in on flowers for a small photo. I think it is about 3 MP or 3.5 MP.
Don't know if this camera is sold any more, but you might find a review
some where. Recently, someone on a photo news board wanted to buy one.
