Hi,

I have a Lexmark Z25 on a Windows 98 system. I had previously had
success at printing a test page and perhaps even other pages as well,
but then, when I recently tried to print, after having moved my system
(a laptop) away and back, I received the error message, "Problem
communicating with the printer." I assumed it was a matter of the USB
cable being loose, but it is not. (I might well add as what seems to
be evidence, that when I take the cable out, the mouse cursor turns to
the kind showing it as doing work (the hourglass).)
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Sounds exactly like the same problem I have with my X73 and USB with
Win98SE. Lexmark hardware is great. Lexmark software and tech "support" is
CRAP!!! If you can, I would take it back to the store before your 30 days
are up. You'll be sorry if you don't.

But, if you can't, here's what I do - may work in your case - don't know...

Two ways:

1 - Always UNplug the USB cable from the printer BEFORE power up the
COMPUTER. Then, just before you get ready to print, plug it in and the power
up the printer. This works for me 90% of the time. If I forget, and leave
the USB cable plugged in when I start the computer, it fails 100% of the
time.

2 - This works about half the time without having to power down the
computer, disconnect USB cable and power up. I have installed this printer
3 times.... from the print menu, under "printer name" I now have Lexmark 73;
Lexmark 73 (copy 2) and Lexmark 73 (copy 3). If I get "user intervention
required" error on the first printer, I try again with copy 2 or 3.

This printer (X73) does a great job printing - no problems there - extra
clear and nice images. Hardly ever jams, either.

A real shame that a good printer like this suffers because they are TOO DAMN
LAZY to have ONE programmer sit and debug the software. I mean the box
says "For Windows 98" DUH-EEEE???!!

Plus, an added benefit... their tech support is in INDIA -- it really sucks.
Yes, they have cultivated the pleasant condescending manner. But besides
that, they never can solve the problem -- always starting with (a) you have
a problem with your USB card or (b) "reinstall the software". Neither is the
problem and they won't let you jump ahead to the actual problem you are
having.

I would never, EVER buy anything with that name on it in the future.

Fred --- also see for more info...

Do a search for my name and Lexmark on goggle if you want to see some of the
replies I've gotten or see www.geocities.com/lexmark8792
