Hi all,

My NEC LX (366mhz) has developed a problem. The touchpad, external mouse,
and keyboard will work for some time, then freeze up, either one at a time
or all at once. The touchpad goes first, if it works at all, but now it
often doesn't work right from the start. Then the mouse & keyboard stop
working, sometimes at the same time, or sometimes the keyboard will keep
working after the mouse stops. This can happen anywhere from a couple
minutes to a couple hours after startup, and can last anywhere from a
fraction of a second to indefinitely, but increasingly it's starting
sooner and requiring a reboot. Sometimes going in & out of standby will
fix things temporarily, but that's working less than it used to. This all
happens under both Windows & Linux, so it's not a software problem.

Does anyone with some knowledge of this machine know what I'd need to
replace to fix this? Any knowledgeable replies will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

I've had a lot of those beasts. Sounds like just the cable being
unplugged, _probably_. The thing that bothers me is that both of them
go out. The touchpad and keyboard have separate cables. If it's the
controller chip, then it's a motherboard swap.

If it was my machine the very first thing I'd do is take it apart and
reseat the t/pad and k/b film connectors. Maybe you dropped the laptop
some time ago, the locking bars for these connectors both came
unlatched, and now they are not sitting properly.

Easy machine to disassemble, just a lot of screws. Sorry I can't give
you a step by step, I sold my last one a while ago.
