Docking station enabled laptops |
|
|
Hi,
I now wonder if I would like to have docking station
enabled laptop. As far as I know Dell and Compaq offers
such models. What else can be extended that way?

Ok, seems some Toshibas and IBMs are too.

Docking stations is been falling out of favors with the advent of
inexpensive and widely available WiFi peripherals and USB hookups.
The only advantage I can see of a docking station is that u routinery
use an external monitor. AND docking stations and port replicators are
two different animals. |

There are some docking stations that let you plug in a PCI card. I
happen to need something like that right now, and may buy an A20p dock
for the purpose. |

my dock is full except for modem and dvi connection. Convenient, but not
critical.

Yep, that's mostly THE reason.

But did I say "port replicators" anywhere?

Docking stations also allow you to charge the laptop battery, without having
to plug in the AC adaptor, not to mention external speakers, mice, etc are
allready plugged in. I find a docking station critical for my needs, and
wont even consider a laptop without one.

I can do 90% of that via USB. Got USB mice, USB speakers, USB-serial
adapters, all of which plug into a tiny hub, then a single USB cable
to my laptop. And USB is hot-unpluggable, not like some docking
stations which require that you power down first, what's that? the
dark ages? |

With XP you can dock and undock without having to reboot the system, I
believe even 2k has this option. Plus with a docking station I don't have to
plug anything into my laptop, just drop it onto the station, and wallah, all
devices, including usb devices, speakers, mouse etc are plugged in. The
bonus? My ports don't get wore out from all of that plugging and unplugging
of devices, and my desktop isn't cluttered with a USB hub and wires coming
off of it going to devices. But to each his own I guess, USB port
replicators are too "backwards" for my taste. ;-)
