Hi
I´m searching for a new laptop, but sofar I have only found these two that
match my requirements:
Acer Travelmate 3202XMi

Gigabit network
Bluetooth
DVD-burner
Weight: less than 2.8 kg
Price: max 14.000 kr or 2600$
Anyone who knows of other laptops that meet my requirements?

Hi
I don´t really need gigabit network or bluwtooth, but I just want to buy a
laptop now with as many features as possible.
Min. resolution on the screen is 1024*768 but I would prefer 1280*1024.

I think you pay attention to non-important features, ignoring other
and that may pain you quote badly. First off all, consider components
you're about to use all the time. These are definitely: display,
keyboard, network, ports. Also HDD, but that quite easy upgradeable (while
display matrix ain't). If you want full featured machine you shall be ready
spending lot of money, getting machine featured with stuff you won't be
using for most of the time. Since I'm about to get new machine as well,
my priorites are: display at least SXGA (1400x1050). CPU 1,5 mobile
(pentium or celeron - depends of price difference - i'm not a gamer so I
don't really care - if java and my development tools will be performing fine
that's ok) Centrino equipped for WIFI. Keyboard (I need to touch the machine
prior to order then, even at the office I plug external full-size keybaord
512MB RAM (in one chip to have second read for expansion), as small HDD as
I can get since I can have replacement HDD with bigger capacity for the
lower price they verndor offers (havent found smaller than 40GB ;(.
At least 2 USB 2.0. FireWire can be nice. Up to 3kgs weights (but that's
not that important). No damn floppy, no useless modem no windows included.
For bluetooth I got external USB device I bought when I received my BT
enabled phone. Haven't using it since then (after week of playing with it).
Now I wonder if I need docking station (hence my other thread) and if I
do really will be burning DVDs on this machine or I can live with
office's burner. That's my $0.03

Just a comment, but it might not be in some situations. I use a laptop with
a couple of SATA drives attached to backup clients' machines before doing
maintenance that puts their data at risk. There the 100 Mb/sec LAN is
sometimes a bottleneck--remember, you don't have to _fill_ a gigabit pipe
for it to be useful.

True, however gigabyte ethernet ain't that widely popular. In your case
you may really need it for your work. For me, even 10 would suffice as I
don't care fetching other big stuff from the net. Instead I'd preffer
wifi on board since wherever I got, the hotspot is present.

Definitely. But the question needs to answered by the potential buyer.
If he only *thinks* he will be using BT daily (instead of *knowing*
that) he may end the game within a week, after trying to connect
everything in you area or syncing mobile addressbook over and over.

Yet. Pricing is such that it's about to start pushing 100TX off the shelves
in the mass-market stores. Gigabit NICs can be had new for ten bucks and 5
port switches for 55. In other words it's reaching the point that the
labor to screw the pieces together costs more than the silicon.
I remember a time when 100 mb/sec was "the impossible dream", then later
that it was incredible high-end stuff that ran only on fiber. At the time
it didn't seem useful for PCs. Gigabit's going the same way but the price
is coming down a lot faster.

Definitely. But the question needs to answered by the potential buyer.
If he only *thinks* he will be using BT daily (instead of *knowing*

Personally I use it every day--I first investigated it when I found that my
wireless keyboard borked every time the kid across the street got out his
radio controlled car. I looked for a spread-spectrum keyboard and found
that Bluetooth is spread-spectrum, so I was an early adopter on bluetooth
keyboards. Since then I've acquired other Bluetooth stuff and found that
it is one of those things that is more useful in the reality than in the
abstract--if you don't have it you wonder what you'll do with it but if you
do have it then you find all kinds of things to do with it. It certainly
doesn't add enough to the cost of a machine at this point (a Bluetooth USB
dongle costs about 17 bucks retail, a chip in the machine is a lot less) to
make it anything to agonize over.

Yep, BT keyboards/mouses may be a reason to have it on board. As I said
each buyer has own requirements for "2nd level" elements.
