GeForce 6200...system sluggish, reason? |
|
|
I have a asus a7n8x mb and am using a geforce 6200 card [agp]
The system, since installing this card, has become sluggish and
downright unresponsive at times.
I was wondering, exactly how terrible is this card I have.
AND
What would be a good replacement to improve things for under $130?
thank you

From rewiews of the early AGP 6200s that had the NV43 GPU,
they where some of the best lowend cards. Some could be unlocked to
become standard 6600 cards. However Nvidia decided to stop these, and
make a cheaper, weaker 6200 based on a new NV44 chip that no longer
required the AGP to PCI-E bridge chip, and only supports a 64-bit
memory bus instead of the 128-bit.
If you have a 6200 that has the bridge chip, than you should
have the NV43 GPU, and most likly a full 128-bit memory bus. If not,
thn you have a cut-down 6200 that performs like the awful PCI-E 6200
Turbo Cache cards. For a $140.00 (in the US), you can get a 6600GT, or
if it has to be under $130.00, at newegg I see they have a Powercolor
X700 AGP with GDDR2 memory for $120.00.

The reviews on the X700 AGP I've seen put it just under the
6600GT. The only thing is that the X700 doesn't support SM 3.0, but
from what I read, you'd need a 6800 Ultra, or better once games take
full advantage of it. I'm not an ATI fanboy, as I own a 6600GT, but
since you mention your price point, this seems to be a nice card at
that budget. |

Hi
Install the newest Nvidia drivers would be a good start. The video card
use system memory if it runs out of onboard ram so if you system has 256
or less the performs will/may be poor. |
