Hi,
I am thinking of selling my laptop. Having never sold a laptop before and not knowing how much its value has fallen since I bought it, I don't know how much the selling price should be.

The specs are the following:

a.. Toshiba Satellite M30
b.. Inter(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 1500 MHz
c.. L2 Cache: 1,024 Kb
d.. Memory: 512 MB
e.. 80 GB Hard Drive
f.. NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200
g.. DVD/CD-RW drive
h.. 15.9 inch wide screen monitor
i.. Harmon/Kardon speakers
j.. Windows XP - Home Edition (5.1.2600)
k.. 1 year Toshiba warranty
l.. 1 year Retailer warranty
Comes with the installation CD's (windows XP home) and the original packing.

I would really appreciate some advice for the price. Thanks

Abdullah

I just purchased an HP laptop, refurbished with 90 day warranty, with
very comparable specifications, for $600. This is *refurbished*, i.e.,
any defective parts replaced and quality checked, with warranty. This
was via Costco online, so there is a six month full refund warranty if I
wish (according to the invoice).

A personal sale will have to be highly discounted from this price: $400
with a full refund in say 15 days.

I'm a bystander here, but I just ran a eBay search and I'm surprised at the
value. I have friends buying $1000 notebooks at Best buy that are head and
shoulders above my aging thinkpad. Perhaps thats the difference between a
business and a home notebook. I know the Ms Fujitsu N5010 was $2200 January
04 and goes on eBay for about 1/3. Still a really nice notebook. Maybe its
those $150 batteries that last 18 months at best.

I turned off the html for those that can't

You'll be disappointed with the apparent value of your laptop I am afraid.
Like a car, a laptop or even a desktop for that matter, begins to depreciate
in value the minute it leaves the dealership or store. I am told by friends
that do a lot of trading on Ubid and Ebay that a laptop that is 1 year old
will bring about 50 to 60 percent of it's original retail price from a
dealer. I see computers, both laptop and desktop, advertised in my local
paper for incredibly reduced figures. You can get a one year old HP or
Compaq, with good specifications, for about $250 to $350. True, laptops are
slightly more, but they are more expensive when new in the first place.

Your asking price should be based on the machines age, hardware, software and documentation that is available. You mention original packaging, and that is a plus. As long as you also have all of the original software that was shipped with the unit. So, you can't be keeping the copy of Office 2003 that was bundled with the unit if you want to get top dollar for it.

Try going to eBay and searching for your model laptop; you can do an advanced search for recently sold units. You can get a number of sales and average them. Remember many eBay sales also include jacked up shipping costs, so that should be factored in as well.
A quick search found prices for sold units from $536.00 + $30 shipping to $772.23 with no shipping quoted. These all had slightly different specs than yours, i.e., less RAM or faster chip speed, but this should give you a starting point. Also, keep in mind that some eBay prices are a little inflated due to the auction-crazed mindset that some people get into when bidding.
Good luck.

Sell it on E-Bay, use a low starting bid ($100 or less) with a "reserve"
and then the market will set the price. The best ad will hit the major
points in a bullet list (like you have below) but don't repeat or copy
the mfgr's web specs. Instead, concentrate on the current condition of
this used item, and on what is and is not included (including, if you
have it, the original box, discs and manuals). Run the ad from Sunday
evening to Sunday evening (or, if you want to do a 10-day ad, from
Thursday evening to Sunday evening, getting two weekends). With an
auction, you don't set the price, the market does. Before you list,
review COMPLETED auctions for the same laptop model to see what they are
going for.

The one thing you have going for you is the warranty. Be sure it's transferable. That might attract buyers to your auction above someone else's with a similar laptop.

And since a picture says a thousand words, be sure you take lots of good quality photos of the laptop especially if it is in above average condition. (And more importantly if it is not.)

Take closeups of the lid/hinge area where hairline stress cracks are likely to occur. Be sure it's clean inside and out, all the batteries are fully charged, and that you list and photograph each and every accessory that comes with the laptop (e.g., extra batteries, extra power supplies, laptop case, external drives, software, etc.).

Good luck!

HLS

P.S. And for what it's worth, I bought the "love of my life" laptop on this very forum from someone posting a For Sale addy. I held onto the practically new laptop for several years before selling it on eBay in favor of what I've got now. But it holds a special place in my heart.
