Quake 4 Crashing on Startup |
|
|
I can't get Quake 4 to run. Oddly, Doom 3 runs just fine. 90% of the
time that I try to play Q4, it crashes and/or locks up during startup.
I've googled the problem, but have found nothing that pertains to my
system. I am not using an Audiolgy sound card, so that isn't the
problem. I've gone thru the nVidia release notes on their drivers, but
see nothing related to Q4. I've seen a lot of complaints about the 81.85
driver, so I'm still running 77.77. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Specs:
ABIT KX7-333R (running with 166/333 FSB)
AMD XP2700
1GB Corsair CAS2 RAM
Fortissimmo II sound card
nVidia 6600GT video, running 77.77 drivers
2x80GB IDE drives in a RAID0
I'm also running PowerStrip 3.62 (video card tweaker), but I am not
overclocking the 6600gt.
Help? |

Try these, one at a time, in this order:
- Disable Powerstrip
- Drop the AGP speed to 2x (esp. since the M/B has an VIA chipset)
- Try the 81.85 drivers (Q4 came out after the 77.77s...)
There is also the remote possibility that SafeDisc4 may not be cooperating
with your system. You can always download the cracked EXE from
www.megagames.com .

I'm running 81.89 (an unofficial release) on my 6600GT without major
problems (there's the 8x.xx glitch in Guild Wars, but that's it). I had
no problems whatsoever with Quake 4 and 81.87 or 89.
The current official release is 81.85 WHQL, so give it a shot. I'm sure
there were a few alterations to the OpenGL rendering path (from D3) that
goof up older drivers.
Otherwise be sure your DirectX is up to date, since Q4 uses that for
sound and input. If all else fails, try diagnosing by disabling
hardware in the Device Manager temporarily. This will free the hardware
resources and not address them in memory -- effectively as they were not
even there. In that case start with the soundcard first. |

I was getting blue screens of death when loading a game, I thought it |
was from using the cracked exe. Went back to the regular one.
I also thought the problem could have been the remnants of a securom
install from the FEAR demo, which took me a while to get completely
removed. I also upgraded to the 81.87 beta drivers
http://nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_winxp_2k_32bit_81.87.html
Though the OP said no audigy, I also updated my audigy drivers.
So from having fairly regular BSODs and CTDs, I now haven't had a single
problem with Quake 4 since applying all the above fixes. I don't know
which one really fixed it.

That's why you should apply the changes one at a time. :-)
Surprisingly enough, cracked exe's usually work as advertised, otherwise the
releases end up getting "nuked".

Re: Quake 4 Crashing on Startup |

I am now using the 81.85 drivers and the no_dvd crack. That helped a
little. The game will load and run ONCE. If I exit and try to restart
it, it crashes during setup, forcing me to reboot. I guess if I want to
play this game, I just have to get used to rebooting beforehand
everytime. :(

I have confirmed that disabling/enabling Powerstrip does not affect the
problem. I have installed the 81.85 drivers and the no_dvd executable.
Those two things helped (fewer crashes), but didn't completely fix the
issue.
I tried disabling the AGP's "write combining". No affect.
In an act of desperation, I lowered the AGP setting to 2X. THAT
completely resolved the issue! But as you can guess, I'm not happy
about it. I play a LOT of games, including Doom3 which uses the same
engine. I have ALWAYS run this mainboard at AGP 4X. Why should I have
to lower it for Quake4?
The other concern is how much that lowers my framerates. So, I tried to
run 3dMark05 to check. The video is corrupt! Tried UT2004. Same thing
- corrupt video!
So, I can cripple my video card (AGP 2x) to play Quake4, but I can't
play anything else without setting it back to 4x, which of course
requires a reboot. I can't figure out who's to blame - Quake4 for
crashing all the time, nVidia for not handling AGP 2X, or maybe VIA
(mainboard chipset)???
I am SO frustrated.... |

Because AGP4x gives no speed benefit over 2x outside of useless synthetic
benchmarks. See:

This is a different story. There's no logical reason why setting a different
AGP speed would corrupt video. Do you have the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers
installed, with Fast Writes and Sideband Addressing disabled?

The blame lies with VIA. :-) Even with my S939 system running the VIA
KT800Pro chipset and a Radeon 9800Pro, I still need to lower the AGP speed
from 8x to 4x or BF2 will lock up after a few seconds, every time.

VIA chipsets have never had very good AGP implementations compared to,
well, pretty much anybody else (Intel, NVidia, SiS, etc.) You should
make sure you've got the latest BIOS and chipset drivers installed. Some
VIA motherboards have a setting for "AGP Driving Value" that one can
play around with and sometimes makes a difference..

I just installed the latest Via Hyperion 4-in-1 drivers, which is
supposed to include an updated AGP driver. That improved nothing.
Quake4 continues to crash in AGP 4X mode, but runs fine in 2X. 3DMark05
and UT2004 have nasty corrupted display problems with AGP 2X mode.
I can run in 2X mode for now, just to play Q4, but having to reboot
everytime I wanna play something else.... sucks.
Yes, I noticed the AGP Driving Value in the bios. Any suggestions on
how I should set that?
FRUSTRATED............... :( |

After a little googling, I tried AGP driving values of EA, and then CA
(the default is DA). No help.
