Re: 5 year old Dell XPST500 |

I have the same computer in a P2 450mhz format.I can only play cds on the
top bay as well because my audio line is only hooked up to that one
drive.Those motherboards only have one audio line on them so you may need a
splitter to run both.As for DVD you can hook one up but will probably need a
decoder card for it to work right,depending on what kind of video card you
have installed.My Dell came with this option.

| Quote: | Hello all,
I was recently given a five year old:
Dell Dimension XPST500 / PIII @ 500mhz
using Win 98
It has two drives:
CD [Upper Bay]
CR/RW - 16x 10x 40x [Lower Bay]
The upper drive plays commercial audio CD's ok.
However, when I burn a commercial audio in the upper bay and insert a
blank
CD in the lower bay using Nero - I can play the _new_ audio CD on my
_other_
computer - but on the Dell - I cannot.
The computer hangs.
My other computer is a Gateway G6-350 PII @350mhz. Also five years old -
using Win98.
I recently installed new drives for that computer. A SONY DVD/CD ROM for
the upper bay and a PLEXWRITER 52x - 24xx - 52A for the lower. Both have
been fine.
My question:
I am thinking of replacing the five year old original CD drive on the DELL
due to this fact.
Can I replace that upper drive with a DVD / CD ROM Drive and have it read
DVD's as well as audio CD's or will I have to purchase an additional card?
Many thanks for your help.
E.
