No big deal John, not that you need defending but this just proves that some
people have more money than brains.

You're jealous 'cause your broke ass can't splash down $1600 on the latest
and greatest.

Wow. Seems like a case of envy.
Here is Richard innocently asking for some advice.
Here comes John with mean words all based on assumptions.
Sad.

When will they be in stock?, i've got the $$ to buy two as i only want
the most high end hardware in my box, thanks.

So you're going to replace them in a few months when something better is
out then? :)

Yes, that's how companies make money from us geeks.

No geek.... More likely an average Joe-Blow with far more money than
sense and a terminal case of the "my dog is better than your dog"
disease. No doubt spends many hours late at night benchmarking and
uploading results to his favorite forums ? Got your nitrogen-cooler
yet ? Most true 'geeks' share quite a bit of <common-sense> together
with sharp technical knowledge in their chosen field. However, keep at
it --- your 'early-adopter' contribution helps pay off development
costs and quickens the price-slide for the rest of us.

Anyway, the 8800GTX512 will be out in a very few months time. Like to
sell me your two 7800GTX512 at that time for say, $250 each ???
Keep chasing the rainbow and please put me permanently on your list
for your electronic cast-offs :-) :-)

Well, the reply could have something to do with the language of the original

There is actually [at least one] case to be made for buying "latest &
greatest".

Person A pays a premium and buys latest & greatest.
Person B buys the 2nd or 3rd best card.

Person A will most often tend to play their games in higher rez with more
eye candy with less stuttering.

You can't put a price on pleasure because we are all different. Richard may
get more pleasure than John from the visual aspects of a game. John may get
more of his pleasure from farm animals.

And since John was ... something... enough to bring up Richard's supposed
lack of sense or intelligence: If I were to be asked to bet on who is the
smarter guy just based on what we have seen each write here, I'd bet with
Richard because there are so far only these differences we know or can
intuit:

- Richard probably makes more money than John because it sounds like he has
enough disposable income to spend $1200 on video cards. I realize
money-making capability doesn't *mean* he's smarter. But it can be a factor.

- In my experience, when an innocent conversation is going on and one person
steers it toward criticism of some trait, that person is often dealing with
that exact trait in their own life. So most likely John, being less
intelligent or maybe not having had as much of a chance to display his
intelligence and have it appreciated, feels the need to denegrate the
intelligence of others as a way to "boost" his own relative perceived
intelligence.

- Finally, since we live in a "society", that is a complex interweaving of
many, as opposed to living alone, the smarter people, except for masochists,
tend to realize attacking people nets very little return on happiness.

So... by defending Richard I realize I could be lowering myself to John's
level and depriving Richard the chance to defend himself but nah... not when
I see others taking John's lead to chime in with their moooo.

And Richard: Yay! I'm glad there are people like you out there, like me, who
FOR WHATEVER REASON, want to have the very best. It's your business why. And
you reap the benefits. Some weak losers will always nip at your heals but
they are easy to kick out of the way or ignore.

Good luck finding this in-stock anywhere, let alone two of them, even if you
are shopping from a corporate expense account. :-) This card may have been a
pure paper-launch just so nVidia can remain as the "technology leader" in
the workstation market.

Well, we have currently around 65 of these "paper launch" cards at work.
They should be available easily, but due to the high cost and the
relative small market most dealers only order them on request...

Cool! I'm curious what your company does, Benjamin.
Game developers?
Thanks.

Sadly, no (but then, my creativity in art things is quite limited).
We're using these cards for Visualizing (presenting models and
constructions) and driving CAVE systems and other VR stuff...
