I want to buy mid range video card for this AGP system. Not rich so cant
go overboard as will be getting upgrade soon and agp will not be in it.

The choice is between

6600GT 128mb and 256mb

my system currently is

Athlon XP2500(OC to 3200+)
512mb RAM
Monitors max res is 1280x1024 and wont be replaced until full upgrade
next year. I will be getting another 512mb RAM also which will
apparently help somewhat.

I was told by an 'expert' friend that the 128mb used DDR3 ram and due to
my low monitor resolution I would not need more than 128mb. IS this BS?
should I get the 256mb anyway as it is only $30 more?

please help I can't decide and I am so looking forward to playing farcry
on a 6600GT as I am currently playing it now on a GF4mx4000-128mb and
the graphics leave a lot to be desired (espec. with cryvision in large
areas).

I am not sure Far Cry benefits from more than 128MB, but for the sake
of $30 I would get the 256MB as there are a few recent games that do
benefit from it. I only have a 128MB 6600GT as that was the only
option when I got mine, but I would definitely go for 256 if I were
buying now.

I have read in several reviews where 128mb video ram is plenty for most
games.

Here is a 256 XFX 6600GT AGP card for 190.00. You can get the same with 128
mb for 120 bucks at newegg.

Ta mate. I am in Australia so the prices here are a bit more. I have

decided to hold off a couple of weeks and get a 6800GT. It will be the
last upgrade made to this machine (except another 512mb RAM) and so I
would like ot mak eit last a while as it will be a good 18-24 months
before I can get another PC.
