NVidia 5700LE vs upgrade? |
|
|
Hi there,
I have a MSI KT3 Ultra ARU motherboard (AGP x4) with an AMD XP2500+ CPU
Installed, 1Gb DDR of ram, and currently an NVidia 5700LE Video card with
128mb ram.
I'm playing EA's BattleFields2 a lot recently and find that I can only run
it smoothly at the lowest screen resolution of 800x600, with most of the
settings set to Low with only a few on Medium.
I also play Doom 3 that runs nicely, but only at 640x480 on which its very
smooth.
In summary, I expected my machine to run these games at almost top
resolutions in most cases, or at least mid resolutions with high detail
settings, am I asking too much? My question is that whether upgrading my
video card to perhaps an NVidia 6600 would make much difference, more system
Ram perhaps, my motherboard takes up to 3gb?
What do I need to do to turn my system into a lean mean gaming machine ;o)
Cheers, @sh |

Excellent thanks Michael, well my motherboard was a great purchase 5 years
ago and have served me very well, and still has scope for the future
supporting up to 3Gb DDR so I'll perhaps nab some of that too.
In the meantime, I'll look at a 6800 512mb card then, and report back! Its a
shame there's no way to chain two AGP cards together to get dual processing
power!
Thanks for your help - has anyone else upgraded from a 5700 and noticed a
dramatic difference?
Cheers! |

Another thing actually, my motherboard hasn't support for PCI-Express, is
this a new fangled technology that will fail, or will it definitely be
replacing AGP, and are the improvements substantial?
Cheers!

about 1GB) and can run BF2 at all settings on high except textures on
medium. A decent 256MB card would allow you to max everything.

Thats brilliant dude the news I've been waiting for, hehe - So if I take it
to 2gb ram (extra 1gb) and grab either the 6600 or 6800 I should be a happy
bloke!!
On the subject of Ram, what DDR ram should I be looking for, or am I stuck
with what my motherboard supports?
Cheers! |

Having done a little research, it looks like I'd be better off with an ATI
Radeon instead, namely...
Asus AX800XT/TVD/256MB ATI Radeon X800 XT PE Platinum 256MB DDR3 VIVO
TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-083-AS)
Take a look at the figures...
Core clock (MHz) Pixel pipelines Peak fill rate (Mpixels/s) Texture
units per pixel pipeline Peak fill rate (Mtexels/s) Memory clock (MHz)
Memory bus width (bits) Peak memory bandwidth (GB/s)
GeForce 6800 325 12 3900 1 3900 700 256 22.4
Radeon X800 Pro 475 12 5700 1 5700 900 256 28.8
GeForce 6800 GT 350 16 5600 1 5600 1000 256 32.0
GeForce 6800 Ultra 400 16 6400 1 6400 1100 256 35.2
GeForce 6800 Ultra Extreme 450 16 7200 1 7200 1100 256 35.2
Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition 520 16 8320 1 8320 1120 256 35.8
And priced at the same as the 6800GT the ATI makes better value for money!
Am I missing something here or should I go with the ATI Platinum?
Cheers

Any ideas on the best place to purchase the 6800?? I've heard that the XFX
version is the best, whats yours and how much? No where has stock of the XFX
so may have to look at Alternatives.

1 GB of memory should be enough for all current games.
An upgrade to almost ANY card would make a difference, because the 5700LE is
kind of the worst card on the market.
For the newest games like F.E.A.R or Quake 4 your processor is a bit to weak
for some high detail options.
A 6600GT or better 6800GT should meet your reqirements.

A new Processor and videocard, and I reccomend a new mainboard as well. ;)
But for average playing a new videocard will do the trick.
