Relative merits of makes |

I'm wanting to replace my old Umax scanner with something having a
higher resolution (it's 600dpi) in the sub £100 mark.
There seems to be three contestants, HP, Epson, Cannon.
Is there any consensus on which makes is the most reliable, i.e. doesn't
crash or play up. I hope the bundled software will be irrelevant as I
would like to continue using Paint Shop Pro for getting scans onto my
hard drive. I assume 'modern' scanners still work using TWAIN.
At the moment I run the scanner daisy chained between the pc and the
printer over the parallel port. I assume switching to a usb connection
will require a standard TWAIN driver which is not device dependent but
are usb scanner drivers machine/model dependent?
I use ME, yes I know XP is claimed to be better, but my ME appears bomb
proof and anyway XP is shortly to be replaced.
Any comments on driver issues would also be welcome as the more plug and
go the scanner is the better. Currently I've used the usb to plug in my
camera and my camcorder without having to load any extra software so I'm
hoping for the same with a usb scanner.
If the above appears stupidly simple it is because the magazines don't
seem to touch on these aspects but hint that some models are more
difficult to install than others. |
