I had a clogged black printhead on my Canon i850 printer, most likel
because I hadn't used it for a while. It would only print on the hig
quality setting and would run out of ink before the end of the page
Colors were fine
I tried to unclog the inkchannel with warm distilled water withou
succes
On advice I read on this forum (I think) I ordered a cleanin
cartridge from Compubiz.com and ran that through the printer usin
their black testpage
It got a little bit better, but not much. I left the cartridge in th
printer for a few days to soak. When I turned on the printer I go
the message: no printhead installed. I reseated the printhead
cleaned the contacts with denatured alcohol, unplugged and plugged i
the power and the printer cable, uninstalled and re-installed th
software, all to no avail
Did the cleaning fluid ruin the printhead? Did I burn out th
printhead printing the testpage? If so, why don't the colors work?
only cleaned the black
The computer recognizes the printer. If you click on File> prin
the printer comes on, it makes all the familiar noises to get read
to print but then it will say: "no printhead installed"
Also, I don't know if this is related, I had been getting anothe
color bleeding back into the yellow cartridge, turning the spong
darker
Do I need a new printer? Any help would be appreciated

Likely. I just replaced an i320 that has the same error as you, with a new
ip5000.

Or just a new printhead. I just checked and there's one on eBay for $42
(plus shipping). I'd say that cheaper than a new printer.

IF YOU CAN FIND A NEW IP4000 FOR UNDER $80.00 THAT IS A CHEAPER CHOICE
BECAUSE YOU GET A MORE MODERN PRINTER, A NEW PRINTHEAD, AND A COMPLETE
SET OF CANON OEM INK CARTS.

A good suggestion if you can still find one, as it too is a discontinued
model.

possibly blown the head if installed before using the alcohol, you
probably would be better off buying a new printer as the suggested
retail for these is £46 but although Canon were known for being cheap
the aggresive tactics used by HP LEXMARK & Epson are making life hard
for canon and their new range of printer contain chipped cartridges
making them more expensive, find the old range ip4000 ip5000 (dpi of
9600x2400) or ip3000 if can't find those replace your printheads
