I have a problem with my laptop (Compaq presario 1700) and probably
you have some suggestion. I can not use fine my laptop since 2 or 3
days. When I turn on the
laptop (running xp), it shutdowns -without previous warning.
Sometimes
it goes fine during a longer time, but it shutdowns anyway. I have
scanned it with AVG and it do not detect a virus. Running under linux
also shuts down. The fan is working fine but I see that the power cord
gets too hot. I do not find any aid on the Internet.

Do you have any suggestion?
I appreciate your help.

A hot power cord is not good. It can be caused by a short circuit at
the laptop power jack on the mainboard. Since the laptop is shutting
down at boot, this is the likely culprit. This is a professional repair
by a qualified technician. Contact your HP/Compaq service center.
