Toshiba Tectra 8000 - bootable CD? |
|
|
Hi All,
Would a Toshiba Tectra 8000 (366MHz, from 1999) boot from a burned
CD-ROM? I'm considering getting one of them but I'm not sure whether
laptops from the "old times" can boot from CDs.
I remember having problems getting a PC (BX chipset based Abit?) to boot
from a home made bootable CDs.
Cheers

Even if you didn't, there are "boot CD loader" programs for floppy disks
that will redirect the boot to a CD drive, even without BIOS support. |

In my experience, yes. I've found the CD-Rom to be compatible with most CD-R
and CD-RW media. Pop the CD in, switch on the laptop and hold down the "C"
key for a few seconds to boot.

Although I don't have one of those, I am sure that it will boot from
CDs. The ability to boot from CDs was added much earlier .... in the
Satellite "400" series era. The 435's (Pentium 120 MHz) did not have
this ability, the 440's and all later models did (this was a Pentium
133MMX CPU, about 1997 (it was a computer originally sold with Windows
95). This same model also featured the addition, for the first time, of
Cardbus support, and USB ports, so that was the juncture at which a lot
of things happened. Again, this was a Pentium one process at 133 MHz.
The Pentium one line went for another 18 months or so, up to 266MHz in
"mobile" CPUs, then the Pentium II's came in around 1998-1999 (and some
of the earliest PII's were only 233MHz). Your Tecra 8000 is a higher
end Pentium II machine and I'm certain it can boot from a CD.
Note, however, some of the CD-ROM drives may not be able to read some
media, and in particular you may have trouble reading CD-RW media, but
most CD-R media should be ok (I read such media routinely even in the
early Satellite 400 series machines). The issues here have more to do
with the CD drive than with the computer, processor or chipset, but to
boot from a CD, it must be supported in the BIOS.

I think that the floppy for the Tecra 8000 was external, meaning that
you might not always have it with you. Many of the ones being sold now
used don't even come with it.

You can also try to burn the CD on 4 speed.
Some CDs that burned on high speed are not supported
Kind regards,

Thanks a lot for your replies.
Yes, the _Tecra_ comes without a FD drive, CD only.
I was feeling a bit like a child in the dark (or mist if you like ;-).
You showed me the way! :-)
