Yes yes! OK well if you're finding the same sort of physics
strangeness, then it's maybe not my own fault...

How does the X2 crank up? Is she wonderful? It will be my next
investment...ah...after the second 7800GT and...uh...maybe another
gig o' ram (*shyly looks around*).

why not try the extra gig of ram first? I did recently and was
pleasantly surprised in the loading times, framerate improvements in
HL2-LC, CoD2, FEAR and Q4 - have the same model card - 6800GT

I tried 2GB ram for a couple of games...the differences I found were:-

HL2: Couldn't see a difference
Riddick: Couldn't see a difference
FEAR: No 'pauses' on high res textures, no difference on med res textures.

To be fair though, my 1GB Corsair has tight timings, when I added the extra
Gig the timings came down...The A64 'love' tight timings, so I personally
benefit more from my 1GB configuration.

The main difference I noticed in going from 1 to 2 gigs was decreased
load times for saved games on several titles, most noticeably, Far
Cry.

Regarding the game engine...Starbreeze developed the Riddick engine,
and superb it is too. Monolith developed the FEAR engine. Vivendi
however, is the publishing company for both titles. I think this is
where people are confused.

AFAIK, Riddick used Doom3 engine. Maybe Starbreeze tweaked it a bit,
but that would be all.

Nope...The Starbreeze engine was built totally from scratch by
Starbreeze...No Doom 3 engine involved...and you can tell the difference.
Riddick's engine is literally superb (watch out for 'The Darkness', which
will be using the same engine but with enhancements - looks unbelievable).

Guys, sorry for the off topic post here, but I'm interested in building a
new PC.
I've used Pentium in the past, but never an Athlon. I'm interested in the
x2 4400.
And I'm going with the Nvidia 7800gt with hopes of sli'ing them one day:)
I selected a pair of corsair twinx1024-4400c25 ddr 550 memory. Can you guys
tell me
if this is ok, or should I have selected a different set of memory. Oh,
also I bought a
DFI lanparty ut nf4 sli-dr mobo. Thoughts please, I'm new to Athlon and
Nvidia!

thanks

This should have been posted under it's own topic so people not
following this thread might see it and be able to comment. Also try
posting in alt.comp.hardware.amd.x86-64 and any motherboard newsgroup
that pertains to the motherboard your considering.

That's ok, everybody was once. I see you're getting some info in your
other thread. Hope it helps. I don't have any NF4 MBs myself so can't
help otherwise.

I stand corrected. Here's some info from Starbreeze:

"
Starbreeze Engine
The Starbreeze Engine is the technology base being used for all projects at
Starbreeze. It is a proprietary game-engine fully owned by Starbreeze AB
that contains all technology needed to develop and run an advanced in-door
or semi-indoor game. It has been under development for over 7 years and is
currently supporting PC, PS2, Xbox and GameCube platforms, and is currently
being extended onto next-generation platforms.

The Engine has been successfully used and expanded during the development on
Enclave (PC, Xbox), Knights of the Temple (PC, PS2, Xbox and GameCube) and
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (PC, Xbox).

Key features
a.. Cutting-edge lighting, including real-time shadows from all lights,
high quality shading with normal mapping. (Xbox / PC)
b.. Light-mapping per light-source. A lighting model for PS2 and GameCube
that is semi-compatible with the fully dynamic Xbox/PC lighting model.
c.. In-house developed tool-set for level building, scripting, normal-map
generation, material editing, texture compilation, animation set
compilation, etc.
d.. Powerful sound-system with Dolby Digital 5.1 support
e.. High character detail with facial animation, lip-sync and behavior
system
f.. Advanced bone-animation system featuring skeleton LODs and layered
animation playback directly from a compressed animation format.
g.. Rag doll physics
h.. Powerful visual scripting system for impressive event driven game-play
i.. Action driven AI developed in close relation with animation
j.. Streamlined build-process for efficient Q/A and short load times"

Wherever I read about F.E.A.R. from forums to reviews, everyone says
it has
amazing graphics....is it just me, or is everyone falling for a load
of hype, because in my eyes, F.E.A.R.s graphics are not so great, and
it's engine is poor.

I've got a high end system, but even at the 'lowly' 1024x768, the
engine 'feels' slugglish at times.

When you compare the graphics against Half Life 2 (especially Lost
Coast), and Chronicles of Riddick, and even Doom 3...they don't match
up.

Bleh.

The worst I've noticed with FEAR has been weirdo physics. Bodies
jumping around...if I get too close to an object (say, a chair) it
starts to vibrate. Straaaaahnge.

Meanwhile, you skirt around what your actual machine specs are. Care
to elucidate?

elucidate? I'll just post my system specs ;)

AMD A64 X2 4400 Drool Core @ 2360 (or thereabouts)
Sparkle 6800GT
1 GB Corsair @ 2.2.2.5 1T
Audigy 2

I think we can classify this as a high end system.

Quote:
Yep, the physics are strange too...although I'm not sure any game has
mastered physics yet. Playing HL2 last night, I *slightly* bumped into a
bench, and shoved/slid it 10 feet across the room, now those benches are
quite difficult to move in my opinion (often taking 2 people to lift from
both ends).

Are you sure the Audigy 2 isn't slowing the system down? How well
does the game run if you use onboard motherboard sound or even a
mid-range sound card?

Monolith has always had this problem with engines, whereby even a high
end system experiences sluggish performance and overall your framerate
is more dependent on scene complexity and the engine limits than your
graphics card.

I will give them credit for FEAR though, it performs much better than I
thought it would and does actually do some extremely complex things from
a graphics programming standpoint (some of the caustics effects and
offset mapping are very intensive and I'm surprised they pulled it off).

I like how FEAR unifies very many complex techniques into one engine
with fairly decent performance, unlike many other games being released
nowadays with per pixel lighting and attempting to implement everything
they can, but very poorly.

I had fun with FEAR and thought it looked at least as good as Doom 3,
even at medium settings, but I still think the Unreal 3 engine (2007) is
going to trump everybody with spherical harmonics (a first step towards
global illumination) and how natural this version of ambient occlusion
will look to people when combined with HDR.

Maybe I did not get it, but this question does not sound right. Audigy 2 can
kick any on board sound's butt and given day, and it is still NOT a
mid-range sound card, even though the new line's release from Creative.
