Stop auto-switch of display when external monitor is attache |

I have a KVM switch between my laptop and my PC that serves its purpose
perfectly. The only problem is that when I switch from the Laptop to
the PC the Laptop automatically recognises that the monitor is no
longer "attached" and diverts the display back to the LCD laptop
screen. When I try to switch back to the laptop the device does not
receive a signal and I must manually set the laptop to use the monitor
again...
Is there anyway I can deactivate this auto-switch? When the KVM is
plugged into the monitor jack (regardless of whether the KVM has focus
or not) on the laptop I always want it to display on the extrenal
monitor only at a set resolution. When it is not plugged in I want to
display on the LCD only at another resolution. Is there are way to
achieve this?

Monitor: Acer AL1715 LCD Monitor
Laptop: Acer Aspire 2000
