6800: 128 MB vs. 256 MB |
|
|
Hello, I noticed the major price differences between 128 MB and 256 MB for NVIDIA 6800 video cards
(AGP). Are those 256 MB really worth it for today's newest games (e.g., Battlefield 2, DOOM 3,
Quake 4, F.E.A.R., Call of Duty 2, etc. with all graphic options at maximum in 1024x768-1152x864
screen resolutions) and upcoming games?
Thank you in advance.

Interesting. And the higher price too. Sheesh. Do you think it is worth
getting 256 MB card that will only last about a year? Next year, I am
planning to upgrade my CPU, motherboard, etc. and it will have PCI Express
slot. I know I can't use this 6800 by then. :(

I think that you will find that no games require 128MB. Hell even the most
graphics intense games only require a 64MB card (Include Doom 3 and Quake
4). I have a 128MB GeForce 6600GT in my secondary gaming PC (for LAN
parties, etc) and it only has 128MB and have been able to play pretty much
everything I wanted. I may have to lower res to 1024x768 instead of
1600x1200, but oh well. And reduce a few graphics options, but it looks
great nevertheless.
A buddy of mine opted for a 9800 Pro 128MB (replacing a POS 64MB card) to
hold him over for another year and he plays Battlefield 2 with it just fine.
Just needs more memory as 512MB just doesn't cut it (unfortunately its RDRAM
which is extremely expensive now).
But if you need all the bells and whistles at higher res then it comes at a
price. |

True, but many (most?) gamers aren't willing to lower the resolution to
1024x768 or reduce a few graphics options, especially if the ONLY reason
is the difference between 128MB on the video card and 256MB on the video
card. If my two choices are to save a few bucks and get 128MB or be
able to play the games the way I want, I choose the 256MB... |

Yep, that's me. I want everything. I can sacrifice FSAA and some anistropic.
My ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB) couldn't do it. :(

I was in the same position this year - whether to upgrade my 5950 and get a
6800 AGP or wait another year knowing I was going to build a new system and
go with PCIx. I figured it was worth it to get the 6800 even if it would
only be for a year, but that's me...

Yeah, I am probably going to do the same thing you did. I still want to game
the newest and upcoming games, but not uprade my motherboard and CPU at this
time.
