Why not? The o/s has always been free. I've always used ones that cost
nothing or at most the cost of the medium (if the net, then nothing).
As to the monitor - I simply don't buy monitors, so I don't know about
them. Which reminds me, I forgot the cost of a video card and a
network card. Say $25 for both?
Seems to me that it's pretty
tough to beat those $299 deals from the Wal-Marts,
It is. But then they don't pay retail - the profit that you pay on
every item if you buy parts yourself instead is totted up on the
package as a whole when you buy it from them.
Office Depot, Best Buy,
etc and one couldn't even come close to putting something together for $300.
Almost all include speakers and a printer of some sorts.
The 64 bit system I am putting together has so far cost me $80 for the
amd 64 3000, $40 for the GA mobo, and $15 for the water-cooler. Next
I'll get a power supply and some ram. I have old cases and disks to the
gunnels. Ditto network cards. So I reckon $200 will have done it.

While those additional parts may be "just laying around," they did cost
something at the time of purchase.
And, lest we forget, the OP was inquiring about his/her laptop.

You can get a fully legal and legit OEM copy of Windows XP for about
$60, but I won't deny that I was thinking hardware only.
I got some very nice Chinese motherboards for $28 each. Don't laugh,
they use Intel 865 chipsets, support Hyperthreading, dual channel DDR
memory, 8 USB 2.0 ports, both Prescott and Northwood CPUs, onboard sound
and LAN and 400/533/800 FSB (they are Matsonic MS-9087C motherboards,
and they are available for about $40 now; my $28 source dried up). I've
used these and they really are "ok". A used Celeron CPU on E-Bay is
about $35. Tiger Direct has had 512 MB DDR PC3200 memory modules for
$9.95 and $19.95 after rebates. You can get a disk drive this week for
$39.95, I think it's 120MB. Cases are available for about $25. A used
ATI Radeon 7000 or 7500 video card is about $15 to $20. The rest of the
stuff is inexpensive.

If it's just water, first, if you wait longer, it may well work again.
Don't give up until you have waited at least a week.
Second, once the water evaporates COMPLETELY (could take a week or more)
it may not be possible to determine that there was a spill.
Wal-Mart is going to have a laptop for $399 on the Friday after
Thanksgiving. Both OfficeMax and OfficeDepot have desktop computers this
week for $299 including monitor (at OfficeMax, it's an LCD monitor). You
can build a low-end desktop computer for under $200.
While I agree with your prices for Wal-Mart, OfficeMax and Office Depot, it
would be pretty tough to put together any desktop for under $200. The OS
alone is going to cost close to $100 and that only leaves $100 for a case,
motherboard, cpu, memory, keyboard, monitor and mouse. I'm curious as to
how that could be accomplished.

Make sure they contact you if there are any charges... If Sony repairs

There will be traces of liquid spill under the keyboard and on the |
motherboard so telling a white lie will not do you any good. If the
water remained in the motherboard for a few days then there will be
corrosion and can be easily identified when the unit is taken apart.
What brand and model? |

Big bucks for sure. Sony charge an arm and a leg for a motherboard and |
you might as well sell it as is and get whatever you can and buy a new

Is the unit insured through your homeowners or renters insurance policy?
Also, since it is a new computer, your dad may have purchased an EXTENDED
warranty for it. That **might** cover the water damage. Why don't you
check on that. Of course, if it is covered, the manufacturer will likely
just try to repair the unit first, rather than replace it.
Before you "go telling tales out of school," check on that first.
Good luck!
HLS
Extended warranty will not cover anything due to abuse, physical |
damage and spills - beleive me. The store is in the business of making
money not losing. Fixing a unit under warranty let's say from Toshiba
requires the repair shop to return the old part after replacing it. So
the tech will not risk his job to return a part that is physically
damaged or any sign of abuse. |

Well, now, please let us know what happened. Even if it is not exactly |
fair, you tried and do not stand to lose anything. Not that I condone
this behavior, but in your shoes, I might have done the same. If the
local store had attempted to repair it, they might have looked the other
way when seeing the cause of the damage and just fixed it. With Sony, it
probably will be a different story ... Still, let us know please. BTW,
have you contacted your home insurance to see to what extent they might
cover the damage? Do not say it happened long ago, just a day or two.
Some companies might cover the damage after a deductible.

Re: laptop won't turn on due to spill |

I doubt if there will be any actual liquid water left, or any corrosion
either.
There could, however, be "water spots". Much depends on both how clean
the water was, and also how closely the repair center looks at it. They
may or may not catch it. One issue is that multiple different modules
or parts could have been damaged, and when they find a bad motherboard
AND a bad keyboard AND a bad hard drive AND a bad CD-ROM .... etc., then
they are going to figure out that it wasn't a simple component failure.
Wait and see, there's no way to know. Much depends on who is doing
the service, what kind of a mood they are in, and how closely they look
at it.
There's also an ethical question, this is an expensive repair (hundreds
of dollars), it WAS the user's fault, it was NOT the manufacturer's
fault. However, rather than get into that any further, I will leave
that matter to the conscience of the user.

You are correct with regard to a "normal" extended warranty, but both
Toshiba and Dell (and I believe many other mfgrs., but not all of them
by any means) also sell (for a higher price) an extended warranty that
DOES include "no fault" coverage for physical damage. This includes
spilling liquids into the laptop, dropping the laptop or any physical
damage to the screen. While it's more expensive, it's not that much
more expensive (Toshiba gets $229 to $299 on most models to
extend/expand the standard 1 year warranty to 3 years WITH the
accidental damage coverage included). Toshiba calls this a
"Systemguard" warranty. |

You know what? I OFTEN take dirty, filthy CRT monitors and clean them
in the kitchen sink with a water sprayer. Gets the entire monitor wet,
although I do know the areas not to soak any more than absolutely
necessary. Been doing it for decades, going back to vacuum tube TV sets
in the 1960's (I have an FCC license and worked in TV stations as an
engineer. Also have a BSEE Degree, ham radio license (since 1963), A+
and Network+ certified, plus quite a few mainframe certifications).
Never lost a monitor yet. You let them dry for the better part of a
week, and there is no water to be found anywhere. Try this test: Take a
bowl, put a quarter inch of water in it, leave it sit out in open air
for a week. It will be dry. And water (just water) does NOT cause
corrosion, at least not in a short period when the water itself was only
present for a brief time.
Of course, if you pourt the water in when the unit is running (as
happened here), that's another matter, as is water inside the hard drive
or the optical drive optics.
