HP Compaq NX9010 - Why does the memory not add up? |

I have an HP Compaq NX9010. When I look in the System properties it
tells me I have 448 MB of RAM. I removed the AC, removed the Battery
then opened the Ram compartment. I found 2 RAM chips. Both indicate
on the lable that they are 256 MB each. 256 +256 = 512, or at least I
thought.
I removed one of the chips and booted the PC back up and found that the
RAM now read 192 MB. I powered down removed battery and switched the
DIMM to the other port- Same.
I then repeated the proceedure with the other DIMM and found it also
reading 192 on each port.
I then installed both DIMM's in at the same time and again it went to
448MB. 192 + 192 =384. Is there something wrong with the system
board, am I not testing these correctly, or did Microsoft fail basic
math? |

RAM being reserved for video - 64meg.

The system uses "shared memory", some of the main memory is "robbed" and
used for video memory. The amount of main memory "subverted" to use as
video memory isn't even fixed or constant, necessarily, so your attempts
to pin this down may not ever seem to reconcile. But that's what's
happening.
