What is they QUIETEST high performance PCI-E card I can get?

I know Gigabyte has a fanless 6600GT and 6800GT, but they seem
overpriced.

I'm looking for something not necessarily fanless but known to be quiet
and gives good price/performance ratio.

My CPU is PENTIUM 4 PRESCOTT DT, 520. 2.8Ghz. Not exactly a screamer,
so I'm not looking to go top of the line for video, just something I can
run current games like battlefield 2 and quake 4 at decent fps.

thanks.

The latest Arctic Cooling NV Silencer (5 rev. 3) is quieter and more
effective than the stock fan/heatsink on nVidia's 6800 series cards.

I am very happy with the one on my 6800GTOC

I like my Asus A8N-SLI (AMD though) with it's "Cool and Quiet" option ...
maybe there's an Intel equivalent. Useful when just browing etc or when
powering my DPL projector ... watching movies. A few years ago I went back
to Intel but I tell you ... the quality, features of this nForce chipset
(ok, only one chip) and the quality, features of this AMD 4000+ and
heatsink/fan now exceed Intel ... imo.

Actually, my AMD 4000+ is the "bottleneck" when running my BFG 7800 GTX ...
technically that is. So if you're going to say a 7800 down the road, you
might do some reading up on what to expect when coupled with that 2.8G CPU.
I did some reading, and went with the single core 4000+. And for what it's
worth, I downloaded and installed that 180 day trial XP64 ... so far works
just fine as advertised (e.g. can't run any 16 bit stuff on it's windows on
windows).

I second this recomendation. I have an X850XTPE with a Arctic Cooling Silencer
as well, and the difference was 200% with it. The stock fan was sooo loud at
boot up, if I hadn't been warned I would have thought something was broken!

Now, I hardly hear it.

Sure ... and all I'm saying is, upgrading to a hi-performance PCI-E card may
be a disappointment with the 2.8G ... and here's an option that worked for
me.

Most HIS-branded video cards come with the Arctic Cooling units as standard
equipment, so it's worthwhile to buy one and save yourself the hassle of
installing the cooler.

Well, Gigabyte also makes a fanless Radeon X800XL. It's a 256MB card
with 16 pixel pipelines (like the 850XT), and 256-bit memory interface.
It costs only $255, and it's literally silent. This is a great
price/performance ratio (another way of saying "value"). I'm not an
authority on CPU - video card matching, but I don't think the X800XL's
performance would go to waste in your 520 machine. By the way, the
Gigabyte X800XL is a beautiful piece of hardware if you're enough of a
geek to have fun appreciating a card's appearance as well as its
performance :-).

Your question was what is the quietest high-performance card. This one
is definitely the quietest, but I don't know if it meets your criteria
for "high-performance." Since you risk being limited by your CPU, it
may be the highest performing card that it makes sense to put in there.

yeah, this is actually a Dell Dimension 4700 that I original bought for
office use, but now I'm using it as my all purpose machine. So given
that, what card do you recommend to pair with it? Keep in mind I'm only
an occasional gamer.

Hi,

Notice any clicking sounds with the new AC ATI Silencer 5 (Rev.2)?
I have one running on a x800 GTO^2 (bios mod) and o/c to X850XTPE
speeds, but the silencer gives me a click click sound. Its a known
problem and had I known it before I would have gone with the Zalman
VF-700 Cu.

Install of the NVsilencer was about 5 minutes, btw.

No clicking.. but I did try to use ATI TOOL to mess with my fan speed. I ended
up having to uninstall it to stop a high pitch whine after I set the fan speed
too high by mistake. I could not get it to reset without uninstalling ATI TOOL..
had me worried for a while there.. whew.

I think I messed up the card by tightening the cooler on the first time.. I can
hardly overclock it now.. :(
