IBM 240X bios battery? |
|
|
I'm trying to get a couple of IBM 240X laptops working, with the idea
of perhaps running Lindows on them.
One seems to have a problem booting. When the power button is pressed,
the box makes some noises (it sounds like the drive spins up) but I
don't get the IBM splash screen.
After repeated tries, I will sometimes get the splash screen and the
box will commence to boot. Sometimes I get the error "bios reset to
defaults".
I've seen these symptoms before on other platforms, and it's usually an
indication of a dying CMOS battery. But looking through the service
manual for the box and googling on the topic, I haven't found any
conclusive proof that the machine has a CMOS battery at all.
I'm planning to take it apart this weekend, but I'd appreciate it if
anyone with experience would chime in. For instance, it's ok if the
battery is soldered in -- my background is hardware, and I'm
comfortable with a soldering iron. I only hope that it isn't
incorporated into the bios chip like some older machines.
Yes, I know the 240X is outmoded and wasn't a very good laptop even
when it was new, but I have them on my bench and I might as well see if
I can make them useful.
Thanks much.

Check out Thinkpads.com, like this thread;

Seems your cmos battery is in between the HD and PC Card slot.
The 240X is generally dealt with under "Legacy Hardware".
Here is the Hardware Maintenance Manual for it;

It is a Thinkpad!

I just took mine apart. Yes. The BIOS battery is soldered in. You do have to
take the palm rest off first. It looks like it ie eitehr 2025 or the 2032
battery.
Mine is doing the same thing and I decided not to mess with it. It is too old
though mine is very clean and the battery actually holds charge.
