SMART alert!! |
|
|
Recently my hp pavilion zd7000 series laptop started giving problems.
Mostly over heating and shutting down which wasnt a big problem if i
restart it after it cools down a little. But in addition to that, it
started showing be the "Blue screen of death atleast once a day". But
again after restart it worked properly.
But yesterday i started getting the SMART alert that my harddisk is
goin to fail and that i should back up my data.I can still enter
windows but it freezes after 5 mins.I googled it and found out that i
cant do any damn thing about it other than replace my harddisk.
Anyway i have an external harddisk which can be connected to my laptop
thro a USB port. Can i use this as a harddisk(Assuming that my built-in
harddisk totally fails)? Is it safe for the laptop and the harddisk? Is
there any way around this probelm? |

You have a chicken-and-egg problem. Before replacing the HDD you need to
determine whether the HDD is the *cause* of your lockups/SMARTalert, or the
*victim* of some other (over-)heating problem. Otherwise the next HDD is
probably going to go to HDD heaven in a short time. |

From what you say, I would urgently backup my data and open the machine |
to clear up the ventilation duct, fan. It looks like heat is at the
basis of your problem and before you end up buying a new laptop, solve
the heat problem before you do anything else.

Try blowing the cooling fan radiators out first.. Smart drive
predictions can mean just what it says but blue screens are an
indication of the same problem.. (As well as others).. Better to back
up data and replace the drive be4 its too late.. |

You probably cannot use that external hard disk as the system drive from
which the system boots, through the USB connection. It's unlikely (but
not impossible) that the system will boot and run Windows satisfactorily
from a USB drive.
You didn't say if it's a 2.5" or 3.5" drive. If it's a 2.5" drive, you
can remove it from the USB enclosure and install it into the laptop.
You would normally have to reinstall Windows.
What you should do is:
-Get a new hard drive for your laptop
-Remove the laptop's bad hard drive
-Install the laptop's bad hard drive into a desktop using an IDE connection
-Recover all recoverable contents from the laptops's failing hard drive
-Burn that content do CDs or DVDs (don't use RW media, and don't use
DVDs unless the laptop can read DVDs)
In this instance, with a failing hard drive, an IDE connection is
preferable to a USB connection. Once the drive starts getting "flakey",
your chances of success and recover with IDE are slightly better than
with USB.

The drive may not be the cause of all of his problems, but if he's
getting SMART errors, the drive is failing.

Actually, overheating to the point of shutting down _is_ a problem. As
others have pointed out you need to solve the overheating problem
first (probably blocked vents). Then run the drive manufacturer's
diagnostic to see if the problems are repairable and will go away. |

Re: SMART alert!! |

Thank you all for your help.
Zd7000 is a big laptop and it overheats often. So i have it mounted such
that the ventillation system on the bottom and the sides are not
blocked. I have already backed up all my data(since i usually back up
my data on the ext HD everyweek) and dont have any important data to
lose. My only gripe is that it is a relatively new laptop(around a
year) and the warranty just ran out. The same hardsisk costs over 300$.
Another thing is that the overheating problem doesnt occur anymore
since windows doesnt doesnt work for more than 5 mins. Tried formatting
the disk but i get an error message and cant do that. In all
probability, the HDs time has ended.
The laptop HD is 2.5" and the ext HD is 3.5",so cant replace it the
existing ext HD(If it only was that easy).
I did see the HD on ebay for much less than 300$ it costs in autorised
shops. The ebay shop says that it has 5 yr warranty. The ebay shop has a
good track record and sells a lot of laptop harddisks. So is it ok if i
get it from ebay and will it be possible to change the HD if it fails
again? |

Don't wait for it to fail. Change it now. I dunno about the ebay
shop but zipzoomfly.com and newegg.com are both good places to buy
laptop hard disks. |

Not necessarily. The SMART checking may be reporting errors solely due to the
drive being overtemp and out of wack as a result.

Generally, yes, the only variable is drive thickness, and most new
drives are "thin" (about 9.5mm thick), while most laptops will take
either a 9.5 or 12.5mm [thick] drive. The older 18mm thick 2.5-inch
drives are no longer made as far as I know.

What Barry said, go to NewEgg.com and get a new one, $300 is a bit
much, and I don't deal with eBay if I have a choice. |
