9800Pro or X700 |
|
|
Hi all.
I've finally decided I need a new card and have narrowed it down to these
two. I always wanted a 9800Pro however now the X700 is around I'm not so
sure anymore.
I use an MSI mobo with an AGP slot. Basically the question is, does the X700
need anything special to run or does it have any known quirks. I see it has
DDR3 memory - will it matter if my mobo used DDR2?
I run an AMD 2600XP, 512mb DDR400 Ram, and have a 400w PSU.
TIA |

It is later in the game than those cards, with todays game technology. I'd say if
you're going to go that cheap, go a little higher and get an x800 PRO with 12
pixel pipelines and 256 bit memory bandwidth and 256 megabytes of memory.
Not one made by ATI, but another company that allows more pixel pipelines
to be unlocked by software, this takes a bit of 'net research, or asking in this
NG about which companies make it. This way, I would get the most bang for
my buck and have the power to play current tech games.

Look for the X800GTO, which is now available in AGP form for about $200. A
little bit more than the X700, but a lot faster. On top of that, there's the
possibility of unlocking additional pipelines on the X800GTO.

Nope. Video RAM is completely different from system RAM. The X700 has no
more or less quirks than the 9800Pro. The two cards are pretty much equal.

Your system is good for running either card.

For the sdame money, you can get an nVidia 6600GT, which beats both he
9800pro and the x700.
NO flames about this being an ATI forum please. I JUST did went thru
the same decision making process, and concluded that the best mid-range
card right now is the 6600GT. Anyone want my old 9700 non-pro that is
HIGHLY overclockable? :) |

Thanks anyway all but I need to keep the cost down to only around AUD$170 so
it's still a toss-up between the 9800 Pro and the X700. |

I just bought a Sapphire X800 GTO 256 card for about $200 <save up for a
couple more weeks for the extra $30 hehehe> You wont be disappointed! I
upgraded from a 9800 pro, and it made a HELL of a difference!!

I had the x800 pro for evaluation and now the 9800 pro |
(palit 380/250 ddr1).
The thing that really bothers me, aside from the fact that the 800 pro
was really much better in any aspect, is that the fog on the 9800 is
just some lame grey wall, with no variations, whereas the 800 pro
had very nice chunks of fog, that were really pretty and it gave
increased visibilty to some extent. Technically they are both
128 bit, so maybe you should try the newer one, even if its
only X 700. |

The X700 has been dropping in price in the past two weeks.
Hopefully it will drop even more as the weeks go on.
