Does anyone know which UDF writer software will work with CD-R or DVD-R
media. All of the software I have found (InCD, FileCD) appear to only
support RW media.

Thanks,

Hate to mention Pinnacle's InstantWrite as the program info is buried on
their site. Besides, think it does not support DVD-R, only CD-R.
Search Google for info.

Sonic's DLA may support CD-R and DVD-R, but Sonic does not state so
explicitly. And the supported drive list has been disabled for more than
a year. Now even this link is bad:

http://www.sonic.com/products/dla/default.asp

Check out here:

(The IBM version may not support "R" media.)

(Drag-to-Disc is renamed DirectCD. Changed the name, most likely, to
conceal the notoriety DirectCD acquired.)

It "does" CD-R (but not sure about DVD).

Why the F%^k use CDR's with UDF?

Well then it doesn't conform to UDF standards.
Why doesn't someone sue them for false advertising?

Why the F%^k are you using CDR's with UDF in the first place?

UDF and packet writing software were meant for CDRW to begin with.

Record Now DLA will format write once media, as did Direct CD on my old

machine.
In each case, udf cd can be finalized to simulate a mastered cd readable on
most readers. Whether this is a good as mastering in the first place - who
knows?
I suppose you could also finalize rw media, but not sure why anyone would
want to.

Will Drag and Drop work from the command prompt window (i.e. can I use the
XCopy command to copy files to the CD)?

Drag and drop in xp is not using udf. From windows explorer it simply

buffers to a temporary directory and writes out the contents when user
chooses. xp will give appropriate prompts.
This will not work from the command prompt. However, you can always do the
same type of thing yourself either from a command prompt or using other that
winxp, just you will have to do all the work of creating a temp directory.
If not using xp, you will need to use mastering software. The native xp
writer is not particularly good, if you want free, try burn4free.

I wasn't asking about the native Drag and Drop built into XP. I was asking
about the Drag and Drop function that comes with Roxio (the successor to
DirectCD).

You meant Drag-to-Disc. Have used it many years. It supports all methods to
copy/move/delete files (Explorer, command line, drag-and-drop, ...). To
reduce the risk of data loss, unmount (eject) the UDF medium immediately
after writing. When I want to _read_ from the UDF disk I put it into the
CD-ROM (not the writer) drive to further reduce the risk. Nevertheless I
lost some data over the years, mainly due to worn out media and user errors.
Have now switched over to using InCD and DVD-RAM (inherent verification
after write, more durable than CD/DVD-RW).

Can all DVD burners use DVD-RAM media, or do you need a specialized burner?

Yes. The choice is rather limited today, but several mfrs announced their

new models will support DVD-RAM.
