Dell Inspiron 6000 |
|
|
Got the above laptop. The background light on the screen doesn't see
to be working. I can barely see the words, etc on the screen and th
screen is almost totally dark. Tried to adjust contrast to no avail
Currently at the utmost setting. Contacted Dell Support and they ha
me make sure the cable was pushed all the way in which I did.
connected an external monitor and it worked fine. It's not that th
screen is switched off (by holding down alt or ctrl and pressing on
of the f keys - support already thought about that). Any ideas
Thanks |

At one point, my laptop screen was way off colour (very red). I sent it
back to the manufacturer and they said that the backlight was finished.
They managed to find a used one and it only cost me about $100 Cdn. A
new screen was much more than the machine was worth.
If you can find a good electronic technician, not necessarily in a
computer shop, he might be able to help you. If not, you may have a
desktop laptop.

Dell Support didn't mention anything about the backlight? A backlight
should (key word here is should) be reasonable to find and replace. Dell
should have one, no problem.

Sounds like a bad backlight, which could be either the lamps themselves
or the inverter that powers them. It could also be a setting in the
software that sets the inverter brightness, I'd think Dell would have
gone through that with you. If it's the lamps or inverter, it's a
service problem, it needs to go to a Dell service center or have someone
come onsite to repair it. |

Actually, there are three possible cause for the probelm:
1). The Inverter.
2). The LCD Cable.
3). The LCD itslef (Backlight).
If your laptop is not under warranty, you will find out it is very expensive
to replace the LCD. Even the LCD cable & inverter ain't cheap.

It can't be the cable because the laptop IS working and an image IS
displayed. A cable failure would be a total failure. In this instance,
the problem is that the backlight is not totally out, but is extremely
dim. That isn't a bad cable. |

I don't think Dell sells backlights separately. AFAIK you need to buy the
whole LCD assembly if you need a new backlight.
But there are lots of 3rd party suppliers for backlights.

I'm speaking from my Laptop repair experience. A pinched cable could indeed cause
this kind of problem though it is the least probability. In this case, the LCD is
the most likely culpit.

| I have the same problem with my Inspiron 6000. If you look real close, you can barely see the icons on the desktop. I was thinking it was the lcd screen, but that didn't make sense. I would think that if the screen itself is bad, nothing would show. Now I'm told that it is either the backlight or the inverter. I'm betting on the backlight, since I found one for $12, and since I have a little electrical experience. I have found that when the ballast goes bad in a flourescent light, it just goes out completely. That's not to say that a weak inverter would not have this effect. But I am still hoping for the simple fix. An inexpensive inverter is about $30 before shipping, but they normally cost about $90. |

I checked out the cable and found it OK. I have ordered a backlight, but I see no place to put it. Can you or someone out there give me some assistance?
