Tom,
Interesting comparison. I went through this myself earlier this year and
ended up buying the Pro versions of Easy2Sync for Files and also Easy2Sync
for Outlook (http://www.easy2sync.de/en/produkte/easy2sync.php).
I've used both for four months to keep a tiny Libretto travelling laptop
synched with a main laptop and also to do mutual backups (as opposed to
syncs) between my main laptop and one used by someone else on the same WiFi
network. The software works brilliantly and the ergonomics are excellent.
Although there's no user forum for the products, the author seems to have
really thought it through and done an excellent job. I've not needed any
info other than the Help within the software.
I've no personal connection with the firm, but I think a good product
deserves a bit of glory.
FWIW, the main drive in my main machine (Tecra S1 laptop with 80GB drive
that I installed a year ago) crashed catastropically earlier this week.
First time it's ever happened to me. Anyway I was back on the air with
another drive and all data restored within an hour. I maintain a duplicate
drive as a backup (in a USB2 holder) cloned using Caspar XP (last backed up
ten days previously) so all I had to do was swap that one in and then use
Easy2Sync to copy over the last ten days of doc and email files from the
other two machines. All very easy and straightforward. (Still made me feel
a bit sick when I heard the drive shriek to a halt though!).
Strangely, Sod's Law seems to have been repealed this week. The drive
failed two days *within* its one year warranty period and is now on its way
for a warranty swap.
Regards,
David Tong.

Dear all,
I know previously on this group people have asked about folder
synchronizer programs,e.g. to keep a laptop up-to-date with a desktop.
I have written a review of the best ones (at
http://www.tomkelsey.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/projects/synchronizer_review.html).
hope this is of use,
cheers,
Tom

I haven't looked at synchronising emails - the ideal option would be to |
use IMAP and keep then on the server.

The main point where most of the programs (including Easy2Sync) failed |
was what I call 'update detection', which is important if you change
the same file on two machines. If you only use the program for doing
backups then this is not important.
Easy2Sync also doesnt have a client / server mode. It _can_
automatically sync when the PC shutsdown, which is a nice feature
missing from others

reminds me of when my home PC HDD crashed, I had a backup only a day |
old on CD and was up and running again in a couple of hours of my
replacement HDD arriving.
A week later one of the servers at work crashed (i.e. a Windows BSOD)
and it was 5 days before the company 'network team' managed to get our
data back (and that another week out of date).
There's noone quite as smug as someone who knows he keeps up-to-date
backups :-)

I use PowerDesk Pro v5 which contains a folder synchronizer.
Although I don't know how well it compares to the others. But I it
to sync amoung many computers. There is also a free stripped down
version, that also contains the synchronizer I almost positive.

Tom,
Actually Easy2Sync *does* have 'update detection' (ssuming you mean the same
as I think you mean).
If a file has been altered on both machines prior to the previous sync, it
flags up the fact and asks which of the two you wish to keep. (You also
have the option of calling up a user-defined comparator to check out the
differences if you want to).
I considered 'update detection' to be essential when I was choosing what to
settle on.
Not sure yet what you mean by client / server mode. Must read your article
again...

ok, I have downloaded and checked Easy2Sync and you are right. I |
thought it did not because there was no mentrion of this on the web
page.
I will update my review.

This means being able to sync over the internet (without 'sharing' |
folders).

Tom,
Since I didn't see it mentioned in your review, here's another program that
does a good job at update detection - Zsync
(http://www.zsksoft.com/index.htm).
I was excited to 'discover' this software back in April this year because it
was the only product I'd then found that made a feature of properly handling
the situation where a file and its synchronised twin have both been edited
(accidentally) since the last sync.
I did some extensive testing and found it worked very well. In fact it has
far more capability than I needed for syncing two laptops. That made the
interface a bit more complicated than I wanted in my routine daily
synchroniser. The other reason is that I wanted Outlook synching as well
and Easy2Sync for Files and Easy2Sync for Outlook make a convenient and easy
to use pair.
You might find Zsync worth investigating.
