I want to print a3 size photos how many megapixel camera is |
|
|
I have the Canon i9100 inket which prints up to A3 size and want to get some
great pics of my baby daughter. I'm looking around at decent priced cameras
and were wondering how many megapixels i have to get to print good, clear
quality prints. Some stores have said 5 but i was thinking at least 6 + for
A3 size is needed? Can someone give me some advice please? I don't want
blurry pics that large.
Also what is a good camera? The new Pentax optio s60 is 6 megapixel and
really cheap here in Australia. |

A3 size is 420x297 mm, which is about 16.5 x 11.7 inches (25.4 mm per inch).
6 megapixels is about 3008x2000 pixels image size.
Printing resolution dpi is pixels per inch.... pixels divided by inches.
2000 pixels / 11.7 inches = 171 dpi printing resolution, if full frame.
170 dpi is marginal, but probably OK for that large size, at least when there
is no other choice. However more pixels would certainly be better. Just fill
in the numbers for other possibilities. No point of the target goal going
over 300 dpi, but 250 dpi would be nice if possible. |

A3 paper is 297 x 420 mm which is about 11 3/4 x 16 1/2 inches. |
To get the "best" print you need 300 DPI. So (300 * 11.75) = 3525 pixels x
(16.5 * 300) = 4950 pixels. Which is 3525 * 4950 = 17,448,750 Pixels or
about 17.5 Megapixels.
There is not a digital camera made today that has that much resolution.
That does not mean you can not get a good looking print on A3 paper. It just
means that you print at a lower DPI. Or interpolate the image bigger.

A Pentax S60 camera makes a 2816 X 2112 pixel image. Which printed at A3 is
(2112/11.75)=179 DPI Apox. It would be a useable print.
A 7 megapixel camera can print A3 at about 261 DPI.
There are 6 to 10 megapixel cameras available.

Beware of camera claiming to have very high res. I saw an ad in
magazine that offers a 10Mpix camera for a low price of about $250.
The fine print did state the print size is achieved through software
interploration. In other word, the software takes crappy low res
picture, blows it up to fake a 10Mpix res. It never stated the true
res but claimed to hold about 100 pictures with internal 32MB memory
which sounds about 3 Mpix camera.
Always look for true resolution if buying a cheap generic digital
camera. Or stick with major names like Canon, Sony, etc.
