Hard drive problem |

Hello,
I have a problem with my harddrive: When I switch the power on, the
Power on Self Test performs correctly, I hear the single beep on the
buzzer, and the drive is correctly identified as the Primary Master Disk
by the BIOS. (20020 MB, UDMA 5) I also get the PCI device listing
display correctly, but just after that the screen displays
L 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01
and so on for nearly 10 lines. If I remove the HDD, instead of those
lines, I get the following message:
DISK BOOT FAILURE, ENTER SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
If everything was normal, I should have Lilo as the bootloader.
Unfortunately, I currently don't have a floppy drive, so I can't boot on
a diskette to see what the problem is.
Did someone have a similar experience? What the problem is, or may be?

Configuration: AMD Athlon XP 2000+ CPU, Asus A7V333 Motherboard, 128 Mb
of RAM, Western Digital 20 Go HDD, a Lite-on CDRW as the secondary
master, no slaves.

That's the standard way that LILO reports the booting progress:
"When LILO is launched it displays the word LILO. Every letter dignifies
a certain state. If LILO cannot be launched, the output letters will
give a clue to the problem.
none - no part of LILO has been loaded. Either LILO has not been
installed or the partition with LILO on it has not been started
L - The first step has been loaded and started but the second step
(/boot/boot.b) could not be loaded. This normally points to a physical
error on the boot device or a faulty disk geometry."

It's looking for a floppy to boot from.

If you weren't attempting to do some reconfiguration in linux just
previously and caused that, then it sounds like your drive is toast.

It is simple. Your LILO is broken. Reinstall from install media. (CD or |
DVD i presume.)
