I am having a problem using an XFX gf5500 256mb or a PNY GF4 TI4200 while trying to play games. Both cards seem to have a problem with sync( letters are smeared, graphics are jittery). I have tried various drivers( 41.09, 56.64, 71.89) w/o success.

If I insert a PNY GF4 MX420 64 mb a I have no problems using the 41.09 driver. All cards are AGP 8X.

My system is:
CPU: AMD 1600+
MB: Chaintech 7VJL5
Chipset: VIA VT8377A Apollo KT400A
MEM: !GB Kingston KVR266X64C25 ( 2x256, 1x512)
P.S. ANTEC 400W

Eagerly awaiting responses.

Bob

_____

Operating system?

Monitor?

What resolutions and refresh rate?

Tried the 5500 and TI4200 cards in a known good system? With what results?

How does the image look in safe mode?

How does the image look for the BIOS screens?

A more exact description of the image problems would help (smeared letters
aren't a sync problem, letters in a game are likely to be displayed in a
different mode than in a word processor, for example.)

The additional info as requested:

Win XP PRO SP2 plus additional security updates.
The monitor is an AWM CM1997PF 19in Flat screen
Resolution is 1024 x 768 at 75 Mhz. Problem persists with other resolutions
and refresh rates.
Current driver is Nvidia 5.6.6.4

Images on screens other than games( Still Life, Delta Force Land Warrior,
Harbinger) are fine. Simple games like Hearts, Solitare etc are fine.

I posted a couple of pictures of the screen to alt.test.binary.posting. Hope
it helps.

I don't see alt.test.binary.posting listed in my available Usenet
newsgroups. Maybe a typo?

The fact that evidently all images except for 3D accelerated games look fine
indicates a driver problem or 3D acceleration settings. What happens if you
turn down the hardware acceleration setting ([Control Panel] [Display]
[Settings] [Advanced] [Troubleshoot] and move the Hardware acceleration
slider to the left)?

I changed the AGP Mode in the BIOS from 8x to 4x and the problem cleared
up. Don't know why.
To see how bad it was I posted an avi at alt.binaries.avi.

Thanks for your advice Phil.

_____

Glad you got some relief. Check what happens when you try different
hardware acceleration settings with the AGP set in the BIOS at X8.

Don't see alt.binaries.avi either.
