When I turn my computer on it takes awhile for it to boot up, i
should not though because i have a 2.2 ghz processor and 512mb of ra
and 40GB hardrive. My main problem is that when it turns of fully, I
will run for 4 seconds and then freezes for 4 seconds, runs for
seconds then freezes for 4 seconds, and repeats itself. Does anyon
know what the problem could be? I have reformatted it a few time
and i still get the same problem

Any help would be appreciated, like what hardware i need to replace..

How much free disk space is available? There should be at least
300-500MB. From a command prompt run: chkdsk /r to check and repair the
file system on the boot disk. It will ask to reboot and type yes.

Could be an overheating CPU if it's a P4... they throttle when overheated.
Your sink may have fallen off or fan failed.

Have you popped the case open yet?

lol, yeaa but its like im looking through a big maze..., but i figured
it might be the processor. I have been meaning to get another one
anyways and a bigger harddrive. i will go ahead and order another
processor and see if thats the problem. does anyone know what a good
processor is for epox mother board intel p4 socket 478? only tryin to
spend about $100. I think i have an old 1.6 northwood cpu overclocked
to 2.2 ghz. don't worry, i checked into it and its stable at that
speed so that cant be the prob.

bad, i've had it since 2002 so...

Before you put another cent into that machine check the electrolytic
capacitors with a magnifying glass for any defects. They go bad first.

it's not likely to be the processor, unless it's been
overheating long-term. If it has, look towards the cause as
that is still more likely the immediate problem. Poor
thermal compound can become problematic over a few years, or
the fan might've failed, or case ventilation unworkable due
to dust buildup. Just perform the regular system maintenace
and cooling checks.

Sometimes bios settings for hardware monitoring, such as fan
thresholds or CPU shutdown/throttling (a secondary setting
independant of the CPU features) could be a culprit,
particularly at a regular interval like the 4 seconds you
reported... but generally they would only be problematic if
you had changed those bios settings immediately prior to the
onset of the problem.
