We just experienced a problem with the main power mode on our laptop
computer (Toshiba Satellite S-157) in that when the battery (not
charged) is NOT inserted, the AC power does not start up
properly.

For some reason, when we do INSERT the battery (it's an old one that
doesn't perform long when fully charged), it DOES starts up at times
with the AC plug inserted.

When checking the little white light bulb on the menu, it reads:

"Full power remaining: 0% on AC power"

It should read %100 if I'm not mistaken...

We are also "blocked" out of using the "Power Options Properties"
box...

Any help would be appreciated - Thanks!

S157 is not the model number of the laptop, it's the configuration
suffix. A typical model number is "2805-S202" or 1415-S173". The model
numbers here are 2805 and 1415, respectively. The suffix gives the
configuration (CPU speed, memory and disk drive size, presence of
options, etc.) of machines that are the same basic model number.

What is the model number?

How old is it? Could be an issue with the CMOS battery.

Three years old...

The battery does not work to full capacity when the
computer says it's charged....

UPDATE:

NOW it seems we cannot turn on the laptop without inserting the battery
(charged or not)

What happens is the laptops runs for about
10-20 seconds...and then shuts-off by itself
unexpectedly...then when we try methods of
taking out the battery, or leaving it in, it'll
run OK...

WHY is this?
