Need a SCSI controller for my desktop wghich will work with |
|
|
Hello
I am having trouble working out which SCSI card I would need (ie the less
cost the better).
I have a Seagate Cheetah Ultra320 80 pin SCSI card. I need to attach this
drive to my test machine and copy the partition to another similar disk.
The scsi controller doesn't need to be bootable or have any fancy features
but it should fit into my PC with a Intel D865 motherboard. The PCI slots
are probably the standard PCI 32 bit type - will that be a problem?
In addition, having a known brand card like an Adaptec might be easier
because I need to find Linux drivers for the card.
Can anyone let me know a good model - ideally Adaptec - which will fit the
bill?
Would the Adaptec 29160 SCSI card work? It says it is 64bit (32-bit
compatible). Does that mean it will still fit in my desktop boards 32 bit
PCI slot? It says it has internal connectors: 68pin LVD, 68 pin Ultra Wide
and 50 pin Ultra. Can I buy a cable/converter so I can plug my 80 pin card
in.

Ebay is good source for cards and 68 - 80 converters.

If you only have a couple of drives on the cable, you will find it quite
hard to detect the difference between bus speeds of 160 & 320

i also have concerns about that.
Now i use Seagate U160 ST173404LW which is bought a few years before.
it only has 30MB average read speed. It is slower than a New ATA drive.
But my P4 PC only come with a PCI slot.
i have question that even the latest U320 drive does not have 160MB/s speed.
what is the point to U320 controller? Grateful for any comments. Thanks a
lot.

No point - unless you've attached multiple drives per channel, your
workload causes the drives to be accessed simultaneously, and you've
connected the controller to an appropriately fast bus.

Rule of thumb is that a SCSI interface must support 4 drives used simultaniously.

Raiding 4 U320 drives.
For single drive at_a_time use an U320 drive can be used with an Ultra2
controller without any noticable difference. For U320 drives that are
faster than 60-70MB/s an U160 controller might be considered but you
probably wont know the difference.

Yeah, so? Did you even bother to read what I said?
Compare like with like.
For Ultra100 IDE like yours that is early_Ultra320/late_Ultra160 for SCSI.

Why is that?
You also don't think an Ultra133 IDE drive will do 133 MB/s, don't you?
So why would you expect a SCSI drive that has to share with much more devices
on the bus than is the case with IDE to actually be capable of 320MB/s.
| Quote: | so U320 is expensive than U160.

Because the Ultra 320 is current and the Ultra160 is old inventory surplus.
